Larry Rankin was first diagnosed with esophageal cancer in June 2017. The prognosis was very good and he was to receive a total of six chemotherapy treatments with surgery to remove part of the esophagus and stomach in the middle of the treatments. He responded positively to the first three treatments and did extremely well after surgery. After the surgery, he returned for another chemotherapy treatment and ended up having a reaction with the platinum in the chemo medicine and was hospitalized. The doctor then told Larry that he would no longer be able to receive this kind of chemo treatment. Larry’s oncologist tried several different treatments and in May of 2018 after a PET scan, more tumors were found on his liver. Once cancer metastasizes to other vital organs, the prognosis drastically changes. Larry was told in order to live, he would have to keep up with a chemo regimen. The latest treatment made him extremely sick. However, there are no other treatment options that are viable. He is forgoing any further treatments and hospice is now involved in making him comfortable.
Larry is married to Denise, a teacher at Derby North Middle School. They have three children. Garrett is 24, Bailey is 18, and Wyatt is 11.
Larry has worked in the athletic department at Wichita State, in media relations, for the last 20 years.
The funds raised for the Rankin's will be utilized immediately. The funds will assist in medical bills and will help ease the financial burden this horrendous situation is taking on this beautiful family.
On behalf of all of us with Team Rankin, thank you in advance for your generosity. No amount is too small, no prayer is too short, no act of kindness is too great!
God bless you and thank you for your contribution.
