As many of you are aware, the Scherer family recently received an unimaginable diagnosis. Jamey was diagnosed with Stage 4 Clear Cell Renal Carcinoma (Kidney Cancer). On May 27, 2020, Jamey was having difficulty breathing, which felt like he had a large weight on his chest. His first thought was that he was having an allergic reaction to some water proofing he was doing in the basement. He went to the local urgent care where they ruled out COVID-19, and did a chest X-ray that showed the right chest cavity was full of fluid. Alone, Jamey headed straight to the ER. After a chest CT, the ER doctor broke the devastating news that they found several tumors in his pleural cavity (chest) and a large tumor on his adrenal gland. In shock and completely alone, Jamey requested Lisa come to the hospital, where he shared the heartbreaking news with her. Due to COVID restrictions, visitors were not allowed and this was the only time Lisa was able to see Jamey during his ten days in the hospital. While there, they drained over nine liters of fluid from his pleural cavity. After many scans, blood work and doctors' visits, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Clear Cell Renal Carcinoma. The tumor on his kidney is about the size of a softball and encases his renal vein. The cancer has also spread to his left adrenal gland and his right pleural cavity, making it a stage 4 diagnosis. Before being released from the hospital Jamey underwent a procedure called pleurodesis, which is the process of scraping and gluing the pleural cavity to stop the fluid from building up. Once Jamey was finally home from the hospital and reunited with his family, he was a little uncomfortable and had some pain from the procedure. He also required at home care to keep the fluids off his pleural cavity. This required draining the fluids from a drain which was put in place during the hospital procedure.
On Monday June 15, Jamey started immunotherapy treatment as renal cancer does not respond to traditional chemotherapy. Immunotherapy will consist of a combination of two drugs which are given intravenously every 21 days for four cycles. He will have scans done in three months to check the progress and success of this immunotherapy. After the four cycles he will continue with one of these drugs every other week for two years. These drugs can come with a myriad of side effects that can compound over time. Undoubtedly, Jamey and his family have a long road ahead of them.
As you all would agree, Jamey is one of the most selfless and positive people we know. He is someone who always sees the the good in everyone. Lisa aptly refers to Jamey as her "rock". He is always there for Lisa and their three daughters (Abby, Emily and Riley) to make their lives as easy as possible. With a calm and caring demeanor, he truly is the backbone to this family of five.
As an Account Executive, Jamey's salary is 100% commission based and dependent on sales. Due to COVID and his compromised immune system, Jamey is unable to meet face-to-face with clients for the foressable future. This will significantly impact their family's income. Setting up a Go Fund Me was the least we could do to help offset the medical expenses already incurred that were not covered by insurance, and those expenses they will continue to incur over the next several years. Any donation, no matter the size, would be appreciated. Please know Jamey and Lisa are extremely grateful for all the wonderful people in their lives who are continuously asking what they can do to help. The Scherer family feels so blessed to be surrounded with so much love and support from friends and family.
Thank you for caring for this wonderful family as much as we do. We will provide updates as they become available.
