Team Supernautiloid is a group of veterans, musicians, and most importantly friends. Our collective endeavor is to refit and equip a 34' sailboat in order to safely participate in and complete the 2023 "Race to Alaska" (R2AK). Race to Alaska is a unique adventure race on the water starting in Port Townsend, Washington, and finishing in Ketchikan, Alaska. The course covers 750 nautical miles (more or less). The race really has only one rule: whatever the vessel, it can only be wind or human-powered. No motors.
S/V Gita is an older (38 years) sailboat, but has been recently surveyed and is in overall good shape. Any donations made to this GoFundMe page will be put towards the following things for the refit:

  • Haulout and boatyard time.
  • Removal of the mast and inspection of the rigging.
  • Temporary removal & storage of the Yanmar marine diesel engine (the salient rule of Race to Alaska, is that the vessel be either wind or human-powered. No engines allowed).
  • Inspect all thru-hull fittings and remove and replace, if neccesary.
  • Install Watt & Sea 300 Hydrogenerator (already purchased). This upgrade is key, as it will keep batteries charged while under sail power, which will power both the navigation system and navigation lights, which will not be dependent upon the main engine to keep the battery bank charged.
  • Remove, inspect, and make any repairs to the mainsail and genoa sail.
  • Purchase storm trysail (trys'l).
  • 1x Revere 6-person survival liferaft.
  • Composting marine toilet. This is a much more environmentally friendly alternative to either a holding tank of overboard option for waste.
  • 12 volt DC cold plate for ice box.
  • Replace lifelines, port and starboard, with synthetic "Spectra" braided line.
  • Install new B&G navigation package (already purchased).
  • Install new navigation lights, to include solar powered (already purchased).
  • Upgrade communications package, to include IrridiumGo, PLBs for all crew, and Garmin inReach for SMS communications.
  • New anti-fouling bottom paint.
  • At the lowest priority, is defraying any travel and administrative costs for the crew.

This list of 'due-outs' seems seems a bit daunting, and it is. Most of the labor will be conducted by Gita's crew, with the exception of things that are beyond our scope (i.e. engine removal).
Our boundless thanks to anyone who chooses to support this adventure.
Thank you.
