Help us materialize Mahlet Girma’s Legacy!
Donation protected
This fundraiser is set up to support the legacy project that was started by Mahlet Girma to fund cancer prevention initiatives in Ethiopia. Mahlet was working hard to secure funding and grants to purchase mammogram machines to be installed in various hospitals in different regions across Ethiopia. She understood the survival rate of breast cancer patients would increase if mammogram machines were geographically closer and available to help detect cancer at its earliest stage. The project has the approval of the Ministry of Health Ethiopia (MOH), who provided the list of the 10 regional hospitals that will house the mammogram machines. Once up and running, these machines will alleviate the physical, financial and emotional strain that women cancer patient and their caregivers face. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer patients in Ethiopia.
The funds collected through this GoFundMe would go towards the following:
- Purchase of the mammogram machines
- Purchase of ultrasound machines
- Purchase of biopsy supplies & equipment
- Cover maintenance cost for the machines
- Cover training cost of operating staff
- Cover the development and distributions of educational materials (for early detection and awareness).
Your donation will bring life altering improvement to the vulnerable and will be tax deductible as all funds will go through Alemtsehay Breast Cancer Foundation a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization based in Tucker, Georgia. We are grateful for your donation.

A little background about Mahlet
Early detection saves lives!
We all have heard this too often, but how many of us have actually thought how inaccessible are the tools for breast cancer early detection to most women in the world?
Our late sister Mahlet Girma was working tirelessly to solve some of this problem in her birth country, Ethiopia. Mahlet was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. Instead of succumbing to her illness and focusing solely on her recovery, she chose every available platform to teach, comfort, strengthen and encourage others by creating and sharing videos. She used every media opportunity to educate about early detection, prevention and treatment options, but also to empower women to know their options and own their choices, and educate them on how to gain their strength. .
She transformed thousands of lives by openly sharing her vulnerability, strength, concerns as well as her reflections on God as her source of strength. Mahlet always found a way to give 100% of her time and energy to help others. She has raised funds for those in need by mobilizing her large circle of family and friends. She was a natural leader with a servant heart, and a successful community organizer. She organized cancer walks, led fundraisers to benefit cancer support foundations, financially supported groups of cancer patients undergoing treatment in Ethiopia, and tirelessly worked on leading the effort to increase early prevention tools and outreach mechanisms in Ethiopia.
Before her passing, Mahlet was working on various projects to help fight breast cancer in Ethiopia. Currently, there are only 2 mammogram machines in the government run hospitals of Black Lion and St. Paul located in the capital, Addis Ababa, and offering their services to the vulnerable majority of the population. Most women cancer patients travel long distance to seek treatment in the city, and for most, it’s a little too late as their cancer has already reached advanced stage. Due to the need of extended stay while undergoing treatment, most deplete their funds and are faced with harsh temporary living conditions not suitable to any human. Mahlet teamed up with Alemtsehay Breast Cancer Foundation (www.abcfonline.org) a foundation that provides such women cancer patients in Ethiopia temporary shelters at the “Pink House” while seeking treatment for breast and uterine cancer. Motivated by her concern, her family and friends throughout the world organized a breast cancer awareness walk to raise funds to help those fighting the disease.
Another aspect of her teaming partnership with ABCF is one that includes expanding preventive services in Ethiopia by supplying mammogram machines to the country’s hospitals serving the most-needy population. She was actively working on this initiative with the support of some friends and with the backing of the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The aim of this GoFundMe is to support this initiative and bring it to fruition.
Thank you and God Bless You.
