“Kids don’t just build boats, boats build kids.”
This is the philosophy that drives the South Bronx, NY-based non-profit Rocking the Boat. Would you like to play a part in empowering the growing minds of tomorrow? Then read on…
We’re team AkzoNobel, and currently, we’re in the midst of one of the most grueling sailing challenges in the world, the Volvo Ocean Race. How did we get to where we are today? All as youngsters, with a huge passion for all things sailing!
We saw budding versions of ourselves when we met the kids at Rocking the Boat last year, which is why we’ve set up this fundraising page to help support their rapidly growing community by donating a new RIB.
Who are these young sailors?Rocking the Boat’s mission is to empower local children challenged by severe economic, educational and social conditions to develop the self-confidence to set ambitious goals and gain the skills necessary to achieve.
We paid a visit
to the organization last July, and believe us, this isn’t your average day out on the water! After a morning of boat building, sailing, and learning about water quality and sustainability initiatives with the students, we could see first-hand the incredible work the organization is doing.
New boat = more sailing time
Rocking the boat is growing rapidly, currently serving more than 350 youth. Their sailing site is located at the mouth of the Bronx River, a little over a mile away from the organization’s boatyard and classroom facility. With larger numbers comes longer transportation times, which significantly cuts into the students valuable learning time.
Our fundraising goal: to raise enough money to buy a new 20-foot RIB, creates the increased capacity needed to transport all students in one fell swoop. Less travel = more learning!
Sailing is something that identifies and connects all of us here at team AkzoNobel, and our crew is well aware of how critical it is to have the right equipment for success. Let’s join together and gift the Rocking the Boat team more time to spend with the kids, both in and out of the water.
