The Dean Valley family is very special. It consists of all staff, governors, pupils, and parents—both past, present, and future. It is a family that supports incredible values such as hope, joy, positivity, and resilience. A major part of that family is Mr. Rob Hasler, our wonderful Year 4 teacher. In October, he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a condition that affects the nerves known as motor neurones. These nerves are found in the brain and spinal cord, and they help tell your muscles what to do.
In MND, the motor neurones gradually stop reaching the muscles, causing them to weaken, stiffen, and waste away. This can affect the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink, and breathe. Some people also experience changes to their thinking and behaviour, but the disease affects everyone differently. MND is life-shortening, and there is currently no cure. While the disease will progress, symptoms can be managed to help achieve the best possible quality of life.
Rob and his family live life to the fullest—always have, always will! They love getting outside and exploring the local area. Rob is a man of many talents. His list of accolades includes being an outstanding teacher, top DJ, pro paintballer, top model, epic gamer, sub-3 marathon runner—the list goes on, feel free to ask him for the exhaustive list if you have a spare couple of hours! He never turns down a challenge or opportunity and is always there to encourage others to do their best.
So, when the Dean Valley family learned about the costs associated with MND, we knew we had to help. This is when #TeamHaslerMND was born — a GoFundMe page for members of our community to support Rob and his family in living life to the fullest for as long as possible.
To kickstart the fundraising, the Dean Valley staff will be completing a challenge to climb White Nancy TWO THOUSAND AND TWENTY-FIVE TIMES in the year 2025. We will share our progress through regular updates on the school website and newsletter. We will also put any information on future fundraising on the Dean Valley school website.
But you can also play your part to support #TeamHaslerMND. Will you complete a certain number of park runs? Can you challenge yourself to run a specific distance? Dance the night away at the danceathon? You may have so many amazing ideas to contribute to our fundraising total, but whatever you do, please use the GoFundMe page link to share with your family and friends so we can reach our goal of £50,000 and make a difference to #TeamHaslerMND.
All the money we raise will go directly to the family to allow them to:
• Create family security, allowing them to enjoy life without financial worries or burdens on their day-to-day life.
• Support the Haslers' relocation to a bungalow or wheelchair-friendly property, ensuring Rob’s mobility needs are met and the family can stay together comfortably.
• Make adaptations to their home so that it is accessible and comfortable for the entire family, such as widening doorways, installing ramps, and creating accessible bathrooms.
• Fund private neuro-physio sessions through Apex Neuro (a Bollington company), which will help Rob strengthen his muscles and slow the rate of decline (this service is not available through the NHS or MND Association funding) and purchase associated equipment for home rehabilitation.
• Cover the cost of assistive technology, such as communication devices or adaptive equipment, to help Rob maintain his independence and quality of life as the disease progresses.
• Provide a wheelchair that allows Rob to enjoy and access nature outside, helping him remain an active member of our community.
• Fund respite care to give Rob’s family time to rest and recharge while ensuring Rob continues to receive care and support.
• Ensure the family can create special memories together, by helping fund family trips, activities, or experiences that Rob and his family can cherish during this time.
The list goes on, and as Rob continues his journey, there may be many more expenses we haven’t yet considered. We will keep you updated on these as we go.
Thank you to the Dean Valley family for taking the time to support #TeamHaslerMND. This Go Fund Me is about so much more than raising money for the Hasler’s, who mean so much to all of us. It’s about coming together as a community during this difficult time, offering our support, love, positivity, and resilience as we navigate Rob's MND diagnosis together. Your kindness and generosity make a world of difference.
