Hello, my name is Teddy, and I'm a non-binary nerd who has just completed my Veterinary Science degree. I work for Lush Cosmetics, and volunteer for Riding for the Disabled Association. I'm passionate about animals and my work, and would like to either go on to complete a Veterinary Surgery degree to become a fully-qualified vet in the UK, or go on to research and study animal behaviour and welfare. I'm very driven by these goals, but I am held back by one pretty major problem: hypersensitivity to noise that goes along with being on the autism spectrum.
Certain noises and sounds can trigger intense fear, panic attacks, physical repulsion and even nausea in me. This is particularly noticable in my home, where the constant street noise (we live next to an airport and a busy motorway), and the noise of people around the house has me in a near-constant state of anxiety. My partner and I are working on moving house to somewhere more suitable, but in our current financial situation, it won't be for a while yet, at least the end of the year. Any sorts of sounds will cause this, from doors opening and closing, to listening to people talking on Skype or to each other in the house, to distant music, to cars and sirens in the distance, to people eating.
My anxiety has led to panic attacks, often at work, and self-harm. Neither of these things are appropriate for someone who wants to go into the professions that I do, and while counselling and medication is helping me, I know that things will be made a lot easier if there's a way to limit the sorts of noises I'm experiencing.
That's where Here One comes in! This amazing company has developed a unique ear bud that is noise-cancelling and fully controllable, that allows me to tune into sounds that I would like to hear (for example, conversations), and cancel out sounds that I don't want to hear, such as that troublesome background noise. It allows me to amplify voices of people I'm speaking to, even in loud environments, making it easier for me to focus and relax. This could be life-changing for me, but I'm currently not able to afford the earbuds (they're £300 - absolutely worth it for this incredible technology, but way out of my budget, especially with shipping and postage fees tacked on)!
