Tegaru Australia for humanitarian aid in Tigrai
On the 3rd of November 2020, the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed Ali waged war on its Northern State Tigrai. As a part of his declaration of the war, the federal government used siege tactics cutting telecommunications, electricity and basic necessities to the region.
Tigrai is estimated to make 5 – 6% of Ethiopia’s 110 million population. The Ethiopian government has locked up over 51,000 ethnic Tegaru living in other regions, using their Ethiopian ID to identify ethnicity. The Ethiopian Federal Government also heavily patrols the Sudan border, preventing Tigrayan civilians from escaping death and war.
As of 28th of November more than 40,000 Tigrayans have fled to Sudan. These refugees recounted the heinous acts at the hands of Federal soldiers based on their ethnicity. The United Nations has expressed fears of war crimes in the region. This is a region that has seen ethnic based violence every 30 years in this century.
The Ethiopian government uses the guise of Law and Order to continue it’s military operation. Whilst proclaiming in official documents that the 500, 000 civilians that reside in the region’s capital only make up 0.4% of the population. The federal government has continuously refused mediation and de-escalation.
The United Nations estimates that over 600,000 Tigrayans' and 90,000 Eritrean refugees in Tigrai are already humanitarian beneficiaries. With the continued air strikes by the federal military in Tigrai, farmers’ crops have been targeted.
It is thus estimated by the United Nations and other international human rights organizations that a humanitarian crisis is in the making with the number of people needing food and medical supplies expected to reach 200 000 within the coming months. Almost half of those refugees are children. The pressure of this war has been further compounded by the Locust infestation and COVID-19.
Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, has refused to allow humanitarian organizations and kicked out international journalist.
As members of the Tigrai minority we ask for your help to raise funds to aid the refugees fleeing the war and those internally displaced. People have left their homes with nothing but the clothes on their back.
