TENANT TAKEOVER 2023

The Louisville Tenants Union is bringing over 20 tenant leaders to Washington D.C. in November to continue our fight for a national rent control policy. We’re members of the national Homes Guarantee campaign and are working with the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to make the case for renters’ rights. We need your help to get there!

We are sending LTU leaders and renters to tell their stories to the director of the FHFA — and we want those impacted to have the opportunity to attend with all expenses covered. Our goal is to raise $8,000 by November 14th.

Who is the Louisville Tenants Union?

The Louisville Tenants Union is a member-led organization with over 300 dues-paying members. Our work is fundamentally different from advocacy or service delivery because all of our work is led and carried out by the people most impacted by the housing crisis. All of our decisions, strategies, and tactics are deeply accountable to a base of working-class people through democratic decision-making.

We are poor and working-class, Black and white, English and Spanish-speaking, old and young, trans and cisgender, queer and straight, and everything in between. We live in the West End, East End, and downtown, in apartments, houses, and trailers. Most of us are tenants; some of us are unhoused; some of us are home owners. We come from different backgrounds, identities, and worldviews. Despite our many differences, we share a common self-interest: We want the guarantee of safe and permanently affordable housing for all. We know the only way we will achieve this is by organizing across lines that are used to divide us. Why? Because the rent is STILL too damn high.

We are part of a core team that brought the first-ever tenant delegation to the White House last year. We told the stories of thousands of tenants across the country who need their rights protected by legislation. Because of that, the federal government is considering a national rent control policy for the first time ever. WE DID THAT. We put tenant organizing on the map in this country, and we are just getting started.
