As she does every year, our mom, Teri, had just celebrated her birthday this past Halloween Day, a tradition we would like to keep having. It was discovered early this year that Teri has a mass growing on her pancreas. Test for the mass have come back benign, however, since the pancreas is a finicky organ, her doctors decided to monitor to ensure it does not develop into a malignant tumor. Her latest check up had revealed that the mass is in fact growing at a rapid pace, and she will need to undergo surgery to remove the mass to prevent further growth. This is necessary as there is still a possibility it can develop into something more severe. She will need to have a pancreatic specialist perform the surgery at an off-island facility as our island does not have one available. Teri will need to be in Los Angeles, California before Nov. 16th as her doctors have advised that the procedure will need to be done as soon as possible to prevent any further complications.

With the off-island surgery comes additional unbudgeted expenses. Pancreatic surgery is a major operation with anywhere from one to two weeks inpatient post-op recovery in the hospital alone. Teri will also need to cover all expenses not covered by insurance such as airfare, lodging, and ground transportation during her 4-weeks stay in Los Angeles.
