Welcome to Texas Big Ones! - Draft Horse Rescue. Our rescue is a grassroots rescue group created to save as many draft horses as possible across the great state of Texas! Many of our horses have been pulled from Texas-based kill pens. These kill-pen horses are on borrowed time before being shipped directly to Mexico for slaughter. The draft horses include horses from outside of Texas where they were overused for farming, pulling logs and breeding. When their usefulness to the farmer is over, these beautiful and kind giants are tossed out and sent to a kill pen where kill buyers buy the horses by the pound. Many people think these horses are old, sickly or severely lame with not much life left in them. However, the reality is that these slaughter bound horses include babies, 5-8 year olds, teen horses and a few 18 year olds. All of these horses are still young enough, and capable of so much more than what they were originally meant for.

Once Texas Big Ones! rescues a horse(s) from a kill pen, they are transported to a our ranch in Texas. There they are given a full exam by our veterinarian, treated for wounds, injuries, pain and given basic care - teeth float, vaccinations, farrier care and lots of treats and cuddles. Our new rescue horses are allowed to rest, relax and decompress on their own schedule while enjoying healthy feed, supplements and high quality hay. Later, these gentle giants are evaluated in terms of previous training, level of desensitization and tolerance to receiving a rider. Through gentle and caring methods we teach these beautiful giants to trust again and to know they are loved.

Once our horses have been through rehabilitation and training for riding and ground manners, they are then made available for adoption as riding horses and/or companion horses to the right home. Potential adopters are required to submit to a very rigorous and comprehensive application process that includes, but is not limited to, a background check, home inspection and contract for adoption. All contracts are contemplated to be fully enforceable for the protection of the horses.
