Textbooks for African Pediatric Surgery trainees
Donation protected
There are very few trained pediatric surgeons in sub-Saharan Africa; 1 for every 1 million children (10 times fewer than in the US). One of the major barriers is simply a lack of modern textbooks on the subject. So, a group of African pediatric surgeons, and their friends from outside Africa, came together to write the book. But now, they can't afford to buy the book for their trainees.
The book, "Pediatric Surgery: A Comprehensive Textbook for Africa", now in its second edition, consists of 2 volumes and is the end result of hard work and collaboration of 212 contributors, including many African pediatric surgeons. The unique collaborative authorship format paired contributors from a high income country (HIC) with one or more from Africa to produce a comprehensive volume that has helped fill the gap between up-to-date pediatric surgical scholarship and knowledge while also responding to the practical needs and realities in low-resource settings.
This essential book was borne out of the sweat of African pediatric surgeons, yet the costs are prohibitive for nearly all pediatric surgery trainees in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our goal is to help everyone of them get a copy of this book.
We will work with the Global Initiative for Children's Surgery (GICS) to ensure that as many Pediatric Surgery fellows currently training in Africa can get this book.
If possible, we would like to contribute one book to each of the training program libraries in each institution for future fellows.
Knowledge is power. Help us pass it on.
Each text costs US$170
