Texture like sun, Dance theatre piece fundraiser

About me

Hello, my name is Diarmuid Armstrong Mayock. I am a professional dancer from the North West of Ireland. Over the last three years, I have worked with companies such as Irish modern dance theatre, Attic projects, Liz Roach company and Cois Ceim. I have expanded my practice to develop and direct my own choreographic work. I have developed my first full length dance-theatre performance titled ‘Texture like Sun’.  

 

The work

'Texture like Sun' is a dance-theatre piece that follows three individuals spiraling through their cycles of dependency, focusing in on the subject of addiction and substance abuse. The world created is both literate and abstract, the atmosphere bleak and euphoric, and the movement spectacular and human. A beautiful original score is being composed by Dee and Lughaidh Armstrong and an immersive lighting plan designed by Matt Burke.  

 

The ideas for this show first came about as I was studying dance in the Netherlands. Issues of addiction were present in my life growing up - seeing it in my close friends and neighbours - and as I grew older, I saw the painful reality of individual experiences and situations. I made a short solo dance piece exploring the theme in my third year of study, since then, I have wanted to do the concept justice with a full-length piece.   

I have been offered the opportunity to premier 'Texture like Sun' in the Samuel Beckett Theatre, in Dublin, this September 2023.  

 

Where will the money go? 

The money raised will be used to allow me to provide my collaborating dancers, musicians, lighting designers/technicians and producer with a salary and to cover their expenses. I am excited to be working with such talented individuals on this project. It is important that they are paid a fee that at least comes close to what they deserve. The money will also be used to cover production costs. 

 

I’m not going to take a fee for this work. This is my choreographic debut and I’m truly excited to make this project a reality with the incredible team I’ve gathered around me.

We have a talented bunch of artists working together to produce this work. 

Our dance performers consist of Nathalie Schmit, Ludmila Gilles and myself. 

Our musical score is being composed by Dee Armstrong from Kila and Lughaidh Armstrong from Sky Atlas. 

Our lighting design is being made by Matt

Burke. 

Our stage manager is Roisin Little

Our show is is being produced by Hannah Dobson.

 

Where are we now

We are now 5 weeks through our creative process and we will continue to build and finish the work in August.  Any support given means the world to me; the opportunity to bring my ideas to life on stage is a huge step forward in my artistic career. And, I am lucky enough to have a team of creative people who are invested in the work and are willing to commit without guarantee of the pay they deserve.
