Support The Kaufman Family

We are starting this go fund me to help ease the financial burden for Cory and Alissa so they can focus their attention on their babies who will need all their support for the coming weeks and months. They have been through so much, let’s lift them up and let them know they aren’t in this alone.

Here is a list of ongoing events and updates for Callie and Koa. Thank you to all who are reading this for your love and ongoing support.

-6/2/23 Alissa, Rachel, Callie, and Koa were driving from Wellington to Loveland around 1:30 PM on I25. Traffic came to a stop a little before the crossroads exit, we were stopped behind a large flatbed trailer truck. A boxy utility type truck rear ended us at high speed and sent us into the truck in front of us.
-Koa and Callie were immediately removed from the car in their car seats and taken to the side of the road where passerby’s came to help. Koa was reactive and crying at the scene, Callie was struggling to breath and pretty unresponsive. The people helping removed her from her car seat and placed her flat on the ground and were monitoring her breathing as directed by dispatch.
-It took first responders about 10 minutes to arrive on scene. They began giving Callie breathing support and loaded her in the ambulance. Alissa went with Callie in the ambulance and she started to show some reactivity on the way to the hospital by moaning and small cries.
-Koa and Rachel followed in the next ambulance shortly after.
-At ER it was determined via ct scan that Koa and Callie both had brain injuries and bleeding. Koas was determined to be a moderate brain injury and Callies was severe.
-At ER it was determined that Rachel had a small brain bleed, a broken sternum, and a break in her back. She stayed 24 hours for monitoring and is recovering at home now.
-Alissa was uninjured
-They got Callie intubated and stable and life flighted her down to children’s hospital in aurora where Cory met her
-Alissa waited with Koa where they later transferred him via ambulance because his injuries were not as severe
-Since arriving at children’s hospital Koa is looking well but is being monitored closely. CT scan and xrays just showed the small brain bleed that was initially found but no other injuries. Eating and behaving fine if not a bit fussy. Has developed a slight fever but doctors are not too concerned and will keep an eye on it. He is on anti seizure medication for preventative measures but has not had any seizures yet.
-upon arrival at children’s for Callie she was also scanned again and put under heavy sedation and paralytics to try to give her brain the opportunity to rest. Many anti seizure and blood pressure medications are being given to try to manage seizures and cranial pressure. Callie continued to have seizures through ~37 hours post accident despite aggressive medications. They struggled to get all of her access lines placed in order to be able to administer new medications properly but finally on the evening of 6/3/23 all lines were successfully in. They were then able to start new types of medications.
-6/4/23 AM Koa will be transferred today or tomorrow out of the picu and into a regular neuro care department for a couple more days of being monitored and then hopefully released. Hopeful for a full recovery.
-6/4/23 AM New medications have helped reduce occurrence of seizures for Callie. However her lungs have developed some fluid in them and a culture showed bacteria-starting antibiotics to help protect from infection. After a change in her hematocrit values a CT scan was done again and showed more swelling in her brain. She is being sent for an MRI to determine the nature of the swelling so we can develop a plan.
-6/4/23 12:45 PM MRI showed that swelling was not as severe as they anticipated. So will continue to let her rest under sedation and paralytics and continue to push the antiseizure and blood pressure medications and monitor seizure activity or hopefully lack thereof.
-6/4/23 12:45 PM Koa will be moved this afternoon out of the picu to the neuro unit for 24 hours of more monitoring with the plan to discharge tomorrow
-6/4/23 6 PM Koa has been moved to the neuro unit and is settling in. He does seem to be pretty uncomfortable which makes sense after the kind of trauma his body experienced. But he is continuing on with anti seizure medication and monitoring and overall looking good. Callie had a small seizure around 4:30 PM but hadn’t had any from 11:30 AM, so everyone is pretty happy with that stretch of time and that it was very small. Her cranial pressures have come down but are still a bit elevated that is to be expected and doctors are comfortable with where they are at at the moment. We will hope those trends continue.
-6/5/23 9AM Happy to report still no seizures for Callie since 4:30 PM yesterday. Plan is to slightly tweak some medications but generally stay the course through today.
-6/5/23 11 AM Koa still is seizure free so they went ahead and removed the eeg’s that were monitoring his brain activity. He has an MRI scheduled for this afternoon just to further evaluate if there is any injury to his brain that we need to know about but he is still behaving normally which is great.

Thank you everybody for the love and support. Your prayers are appreciated and felt. Here’s my guy Koa charging on.

Callie is still intubated and heavily sedated therefore I will hold off on sharing a photo of her. Her seizure activity for the time being has slowed and we pray she is nearing the end of the acute phase of her injury and we can begin to assess the damage more.
