Who is Renée?

.

Renée is a Thai LGBTQ political refugee who fights for democracy in Thailand. She fled Thailand in 2022 to seek asylum in France. She is accused of lèse-majesté law (code 112) against the monarchy in which she could be punished with imprisonment of three to fifteen years with no parole. She is also charged with the Computer-related Crime Act (Code 116). All of the charges were reported and raised just following a single Facebook post about the actual King of Thailand that has been published on her count.

‍⚖️Section 112 of the law is a criminal code that falls under the category of security-related cases. which states that “Whoever defames, insults or threatens the King, the Queen, the Heir-apparent or the Regent shall be liable to imprisonment from three to fifteen years.”

(กฎหมายมาตรา 112 เป็นประมวลกฎหมายอาญาที่อยู่ในหมวดคดีความมั่นคง ซึ่งระบุว่า “ผู้ใดหมิ่นประมาท ดูหมิ่น หรือแสดงความอาฆาตมาดร้ายพระมหากษัตริย์ พระราชินี รัชทายาท หรือผู้สำเร็จราชการแทนพระองค์ ต้องระวางโทษจำคุกตั้งแต่สามปีถึงสิบห้าปี”)

☀️Journey of Renée

Renée arrived in France in October 2022 after her second flee attempt and support from airport authorities in Taiwan. Her actual flight was destined for South Africa with a stopover in Paris. She requested asylum and was sheltered by the French authority in Charles de Gaulle Airport for a week. She was freed after that and she asked a Thai political refugee friend to host her upon arrival. Her luggage has already arrived in South Africa and of course, she has just a few clothes with her for daily survival. For almost 9 months now she has been waiting for refugee status from the French government after three rejections but still she hasn’t lost hope.

‍⚖️Lawyers from the Lawyers for Human Rights Center (TLHR) said that because of the heavy penalties, The misinterpretation is too widespread. and conditions that allow anyone to file a complaint causing the accused to be unsure of whether they will receive justice

(ทนายความจากศูนย์ทนายความเพื่อสิทธิมนุษยชน (TLHR) กล่าวว่า เนื่องจากบทลงโทษหนัก การตีความที่ผิดจึงแพร่หลายเกินไป และเงื่อนไขที่ให้ใครก็ตามยื่นคำร้องได้ทำให้จำเลยไม่แน่ใจว่าจะได้รับความยุติธรรมหรือไม่)

‼️The demands for reform of the monarchy that have erupted since the 2020 rallies have been followed by mass reactions on the other side. causing Thai society to see the use of Section 112 as a tool to deal with political opinions once again Reflected from the prosecution of Section 112 against 255 individuals in 275 cases in just 2 and a half years (November 2020 - August 2023) in the total number of cases. There were 133 lawsuits filed by the public, followed by allegations made by the police themselves.

(ข้อเรียกร้องในการปฏิรูปสถาบันกษัตริย์ที่ปะทุขึ้นตั้งแต่การชุมนุมในปี 2563 ตามมาด้วยปฏิกิริยามวลชนในอีกด้านหนึ่ง ทำให้สังคมไทยมองว่าการใช้มาตรา 112 เป็นเครื่องมือในการจัดการกับความคิดเห็นทางการเมืองอีกครั้ง สะท้อนจากการดำเนินคดีตามมาตรา 112 ต่อบุคคล 255 รายใน 275 คดี ในเวลาเพียง 2 ปีครึ่ง (พฤศจิกายน 2563 – สิงหาคม 2566) รวม จำนวนคดี มีประชาชนยื่นฟ้อง 133 คดี รองลงมาคือเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจเอง)

‼️Compared to five years under the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) military junta, where 169 people were prosecuted between 2014 and 2019, and other preceding situations, Ms. Poonsuk said that Prosecution under Section 112 in the latest wave “There are more than ever before.”

Renée can’t go back to my Hometown because The Thai police initially issued a Thai definition to the accused. And issue an arrest warrant now

When I decided to flee the country The police issued an arrest warrant on the day I escaped. and my list Also attached to the national security Watch list issued by the military government. I'm on the 68th list out of 183 people.

️‍Why help Rénée and how?

Renée is a transwoman and she is risked being sent back to Thailand and being placed in jail along with other male inmates where living conditions and her security are not guaranteed. Renée is also a mother of four cats.

You can help her by doing these actions:

✅Please donate to this fundraising campaign. The total amount collected will be used for her daily stipends and necessities. Some parts of the donation will be her savings for her juridical j’a l support.

✅Host her at your place. She is now moving to different accommodation provided by other Thai political refugees in Paris. Not all of them can host her for a long period due to personal issues. She will appreciate if you can offer her a little space in your house. She’s willing to contribute to house choirs or take care of your pets.

✅Spread the news! Passing this info to your family, friends and colleagues. This would also help the world to understand that Thailand has long-term underlying issues and needs serious saving. Thailand is not only a global tourism paradise but also an imaginary cage for those who fight for democracy and the equality of all humans.

 Renée is not the only one

Thailand is not a safe home for innocent citizens like Rénée and many others who fled the country just because they expressed their opinion about politics or the monarchy. Freedom of expression is diminished and anyone could accuse or bully strangers of the lèse-majesté law.
