My name is Chris Bradley and I run a guitar accessories company called Thalia. We are well known for guitar capos, straps, phone cases and other items. You can see our products at Thalia Capos .
Like many small businesses in the bay area we were shut down as a "non-essential" business on April 12. However, a doctor friend of mine, Gary Tamkin , MD, FACEP who oversees 30 emergency departments in California approached me and told me that frontline medical workers needed our help building intubation boxes.
An intubation box provides additional protection between medical staff and patient when performing endotracheal intubation in a patient with known or suspected COVID-19. Intubating a COVID-19 patient is considered an extremely high-risk procedure for medical staff in the ED or ICU. This box is designed to reduce this risk by containing the aerosols generated by the patient during the intubation procedure.
The original aerosol box was created by Dr. Hsien Yung Lai in Taiwan. However, we felt we could make some significant design improvements so we redesigned it and retooled it for high-speed manufacturing in our Pleasant Hill, California factory. The result is the Thalia Box. As of April 5, we are currently able to make 50 boxes per day but expect to be up to 200 boxes per day by April 10.
You can find out more details or purchase a box directly on our website
Our goal is to make as many intubation boxes as are needed and requested by frontline medical staff. For every $175 raised we will send one box to the frontlines where they are needed most. We will post updates including exactly where each Thalia box goes including a map in the coming days.
Thank you for your support!
