Thanh's Freedom and Reentry Fund
Donation protected
Thanh Tran was recently granted a commutation in January of 2022 by Governor Gavin Newsom. With the wonderful and unexpected news of the possibility of Thanh coming home soon, we are asking for your help as we prepare for his freedom and reentry.
He is a journalist, singer/songwriter, filmmaker, activist, and organizer from Sacramento, California, and for the past 10 years has been incarcerated, most recently at California’s San Quentin State Prison.
Thanh actively participates in the San Quentin Inside Organizing Team, supporting the Ella Baker Center with legislation from the inside. He was chosen as the very first “Inside Fellow” for the Ella Baker Center Inside/Outside Fellowship. As a fellow, Thanh has spoken directly to legislators, assisted the #StopSanQuentinOutbreak efforts for decarceration through writings and speaking to the media, and has participated in lobby visits. Thanh is also a producer for Uncuffed, a KALW podcast about the struggles and triumphs behind the walls, and is also a film producer for Forward This, a film crew in San Quentin that shares stories of hope, transformation, and rehabilitation.
When Thanh is home, he will continue to help create change and fight back against the injustices that incarcerated people live through daily. He will use his passion for journalism, film, and music to advocate for meaningful policy and give back to his community, from Sacramento to the Bay Area.
In Thanh’s own words, “It has been incredibly empowering to use this opportunity to speak out on behalf of myself and those who suffer here with me and advocate for our releases. Thank you for staying in this fight with me and believing in your power and mine."
"We are never powerless as long as we are in community." - Thanh Tran
