Thank You for Choosing Fitness. Thank You Aux.
Aux kept us going. Now they need us to keep them going.
We can all agree that Aux is unlike any other gym. Aux has been there for us, in every way possible, during lockdown. They took care of our bodies. They took care of our minds. They took care of us. And they did it because of who they are and what they believe. They gave us everything they had and more.
They found ways around no equipment, minimal equipment and some equipment. When they realized we couldn’t get what we needed, they lent out what they had.
They cleaned. They cleaned some more. They disinfected. They sanitized. They moved us outside. They moved us inside. They moved us online. They adapted and adapted again. They ran around tracks and couches. They demonstrated with furniture and bags of books. They found us options we didn’t know were possible. They found ways to keep us moving.
They stood in the rain with us, and now, they are standing in the snow. They will not let us down.
Few businesses have pivoted so hard and so fast, with only days notice, for the entirety of the current health crisis. They fought to stay open. They fought to keep us safe. They fought to keep us healthy. They have fought for us.
This second lockdown is more than most businesses can handle. Our coaches have given us everything they have, but we, as members, all know the harsh and unspoken reality of what they are up against. Do they get a heater to keep their coaches warm for outdoor workouts? Or do they pay the hydro bill? Do they get a fogger to disinfect the entire gym? Or do they pay salaries? Do they mark out spots on the floor to maximize how people are able to workout inside? Or do they change the entire configuration of the gym, so we can socially distance safely, while taking the financial hit themselves? They do this again. And again. And ... again.
“When you can’t run, you walk. When you can’t walk, you crawl. And when you can’t crawl, you find someone to carry you.” We can carry a lot guys. They built us to carry loads we never thought we could. It’s time to do some heavy lifting of our own.
It is Giving Tuesday as I write this and I can’t think of anyone in my immediate circle who deserves more help than the incredible team at Auxiliary. From, Nani and the WODs that make us cry and come back for more. Rob, who scrubbed every medicine ball and skipping rope, refusing help, so none of us risked getting sick. Tiago, who smiles with his whole face each morning, no matter how much of it is hidden behind a mask. Sam, who is much too cheery for riding us so hard. Even Tanner, who got his 9:30am ZOOM group together every morning, propping up phones on peanut butter jars for a timer we could see, while he encouraged us to get through not only the workout, but what seemed like the whole day.
Not to forget, Nat’s trivia nights on ZOOM, Nani’s online workshops, seminars; Rob’s food prep challenges, Sam’s Around the Horns, they found a way.
And we can’t ignore, during the height of all this, Aux had to walk away from the brand we all followed and loved, demanding change and equality, including us in that decision; making sure our own voices were heard.
This is family in every sense of the word. And when family needs us, we step up.
In the immortal words of The Rock, “Rent’s due.”
We needed them. They need us now.
It’s go time.
