That Badd Scholar Startup Funds

Donation protected
I am starting a (truly) community led project rooted in public sociology to benefit marginalized students in higher education.

Personal Motivation: A very close friend of mine was murdered right after she fought her way out of trauma. She escaped only to fall victim to violence on several levels. I haven't been right since.

This loss, coupled with my scholarship to date in undergraduate and graduate school, has reignited my passion for direct impact in some of the communities I come from.

I plan to use this project as a beginning~ to organize and mobilize scholars like myself  who fought like hell to get here  so that we may stop bringing our stories, our power, to the ivory tower for their purposes. Rather, we can envision how to infuse our power through mentorship networks, self-publishing, creative endeavors such as jewelry and photography, visual arts and so on.

My girl was radical and bold. I miss her everyday. She saw education as liberation, as a way out (through the mind if nothing else). This project uses her vision of radical transformation and fuses it to art and scholarship in at risk communities. Big goals, small start. Us.

Like any community effort, ANYTHING helps get us off the ground. Put five on it.

How funds will be used:

This program will initially be run as a forum and community resource tool as we build momentum. Proceeds from "That Badd Scholar" purchases from www.ravendeveruxdesigns.com/thatbaddscholar will be routed to a private emergency fund for students of color at UCLA. Future endeavors will include community engagement, academic/social support and more.
