I’ve had the chance to work across different industries as an art director, graphic designer, and photographer, and while I’ve honed my skills in the more “commercial” settings, I’ve started to explore the significance of art and beauty as contemplation and inspiration, beyond just the aesthetic sense. By no means am I abandoning my design process for visual abstraction and calling it personal expression—I think it’s a lot deeper than that; instead, I’m trying to introduce an even richer level of thought, intentionality, and nuance into my process as a designer that might also give other people the tools to rediscover beauty, wonder, and a renewed sense of awe.
Masters Degree at King’s College London:
I hope to participate in the Christianity & the Arts Program at King’s College in London to gain a deeper academic understanding of beauty, goodness, and truth, commonly known as the Transcendentals. This program will help equip me and the church with a more comprehensive theology for art and design in the church. It will also give me an in-depth academic understanding of how Christian art has influenced cultural and philosophical concepts over centuries. This one-year master’s degree course delves into the depiction of Christian themes in art over the past 2,000 years. It examines the concept of beauty within the Western tradition and explores how cultural and historical contexts have shaped these themes.
The program leverages King’s College London’s exceptional location by incorporating studies of art in London’s collections, particularly the resources at the National Gallery. It encourages interdisciplinary work, allowing students to explore both the history and cultural dimensions in tandem, which are typically studied separately.
By studying Christian themes in art, I want to understand not just religious values but also how art reflects society today and how it has evolved over time. It’s not just for the religiously inclined—which is crucial for me—but also for anyone interested in the rich tapestry of human culture and history.
