The Aylesbury Desert Ducks

We are Chris, Dafydd, David, Johnny and Michael, ex-classmates from Aylesbury Grammar School, now all aged 60+ and we are The Aylesbury Desert Ducks.

On 13 January 2023 we will leave Aylesbury in our trusty Peugeot van to travel to Banjul in The Gambia as part of the Bangers to Banjul Challenge

Our 3700-mile trip will take in France, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal before finally arriving in The Gambia over the weekend of 28/29 January (all being well!)

We will be travelling across the Sahara Desert (hence our name!) and camping much of the way.

On arrival in The Gambia our van will be auctioned, with the proceeds going to local African charities.

We will also be carrying used NHS prosthetic limbs to donate to Legs4Africa.

We are funding all the trip expenses ourselves, including the purchase of the van, but we are inviting you to sponsor us to raise money for our chosen charity - The GLOVE Project

This is a small UK registered charity and we are supporting their work with child amputees in The Gambia. Disabled children are frequently hidden away in Africa, with little prospect of being more than street beggars. Since 2019 the charity has been working to provide prosthetic legs and support for amputee children so that they can be accepted by their families, peers and local communities. They ensure that the children can remain with their families, attend school and even go on to apprenticeships. Not only do they source the prosthetic limbs and medical care for the children, they ensure that they have uniforms, books, food and even bicycles to get them to school.

The charity is currently fundraising to purchase a vehicle to be able to carry out home and school monitoring visits for the children they support as without this they cannot ensure they can reach all the children who need them.
