The Barbosa Family

Hello, my name is Maria. A few months ago I met this sweet family from Macedonia. I had just packed up my car from shopping at Trader Joe's and was starting to head home. I drove by the three of them standing near the parking lot, with the man playing the accordion and his wife and son standing by his side, hoping for a small donation. Initially, I drove by without stopping, but before making it to the main road, something was stirring in me to go back. Turning the car around, I parked and walked up to them. I've given money before to people asking for help on the street, however, this time it was different. I got a chance to speak with them and to hear their story. After losing their parents, many of their siblings had dispersed seeking a better life, and they had little choice but to leave their home country. Their time in the US thus far has been challenging. Beyond challenges that any one of us reading this has ever faced. Their struggle to survive is day-to-day. I was saddened to hear that the lawyer they originally met with to file for political asylum took advantage of them with no recourse. I was equally disappointed to hear of the judgemental comments made to them because they have their son on the street with them each day. They want to work desperately. However, It takes a minimum of 6 months to obtain a work permit once you file for political asylum. In the meantime, what can they do but ask for help? So this isn't just a fundraiser, it's a lifesaver for them. It's hope. It's a bridge to get through 6 months rent, legal fees and food until they can obtain a work permit. Any donation, large or small, I can assure you will be accepted with sincere gratitude and humility.
