The Basin Food is Free project
Donation protected
Did you know that it’s estimated that each night there is around 700 homeless people that sleep in the dandenongs?
Further, everyday families are struggling to make ends meet, with both these in mind we are starting up a food forest in The Basin where anyone can come along and pick fresh fruit and veggies for free.
The Salvation Army has kindly granted us the use of some of their land but now we need funds to make the forest a reality,
The initial funds will be used to purchase fruit boxes for the garden, firstly we may not be on this site forever as it is valuable land owned by the Salvos and at any stage we could be asked to move so our garden needs to be portable, second there’s loads of rabbits on the site so our gardens need to be up high.
All together we will need around 10 fruit crates and new will cost around $250 each to setup and secondhand (free) boxes will cost around $120 to setup. All boxes will be setup as wicking beds which most importantly takes away the need for volunteers to spend valuable time at the garden.
Any left over funds will pay for a shed to keep tools etc, I am thinking a 20foot container will be best as it’s potable and most of all strong and lockable and a good waterproof one costs around $1600 - $1800
