The BEL Library Construction Fund

Donation protected
Hi! My name is Peter Agaba, and I just received my Master’s degree in International Economics and Finance at Brandeis University’s International Business School in Waltham, MA.

As an international economics student hailing from Uganda, I realize that many people and cultures have come to  understand that the continent of Africa,Uganda in particular,  is rich in natural resources, culture, and a continual improvement to the quality of life.

Our local communities have survived solely through intrinsic traits of persistence and sustainability, resulting in enhancements in our lifestyle that grow exponentially year after year; however, certain struggles continue.

Education and the availability of books and computer resources - for children, young adults, and people from all age groups - is just one of these struggles. In today's times of global hardship, it remains vital that all communities band together to continue uplifting those of us who have been previously overlooked.

That is why I would like to introduce to you the Bwoga Elementary Library (BEL). The BEL is a passion project that I have been organizing over the past six years of my academic career in America.

Our mission is to drastically change the lives of children in Bwoga (with a focus on female empowerment) by:

       1) Assisting kids who struggle with certain social stigmas and
traumatic experiences by introducing and exposing them
             to
the importance of life, health, and sexual education; and

       2) Combating trans-generational hunger and poverty by providing
the educational materials necessary to acquire
             fundamental economic and life skills.

Our Main Goal:

BEL’s main objective is to design, build, and staff a library and learning center for the Bwoga Elementary School, the only elementary school in the community. As you can see, it is currently  in dire need of repair and ill-equipped to provide a proper learning environment.

All donations made towards BEL will help move the community forward by allowing it to provide the following functions:

           1) Build, staff, & properly equip BEL

           2) Invite guest speakers to discuss: female education; civil
                engagement; etc.

           3) Expose students to opportunities like athletic and
                academic scholarships/grants

           4) Classes on life and educational skills: science projects;
                crafts; drama and music; knitting

           5) Classes on sex education and family planning

           6) Workshops on environmental impact: recycling; waste
                collection; communal farming

           7) Teach business skills like design thinking and appropriate
                farming techniques

Our Timeline:

           1) Get our beautiful & amazing reader, YOU, to either share our page or
donate to our mission TODAY : )

            2) Raise our goal of $10,000 by August 15th

            3) Start library construction in mid-August 2020

            4) Give all donors monthly progress reports

            5) Structures complete by December 2020

We are pleased to report that the BEL has secured the funding for construction, and all proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward operations, programming, and filling the library with books, computers, and necessary equipment.

If you are still with us, thank you so much. Please help us bring hope to the hopeless. The impact of these donations on the children of our community, ESPECIALLY in the time of COVID-19, is unquantifiable.

We would truly appreciate any gift, 5 minutes of your time to share on FB, $5, $25, $50, $100, or $1,000. EVERY DONATION HELPS & NO ACT OF KINDNESS WILL BE OVERLOOKED!

I would also suggest that any gift you give, you might also want to check with your tax specialist because it might be tax deductible!

My community and I are extremely grateful and will personally thank all who donate to the BEL Construction Fund.

Thank you very much for your help, love, and support on this journey and may God bless you all!

My Background:

Where I am now is worlds away from where I originally come from. I was raised in Bwoga, a small, rural village in Western Uganda.

Traditionally our community has sustained itself through agriculture, yet climatic conditions and globalizing markets have significantly decreased local farm productivity. This has left many families who rely on outdated farming methods unable to sustainably compete.

A majority of my community has been left facing many hardships, like being unable to pay school fees for their children, most of whom are forced into early marriage and extreme poverty. Most people are uneducated, with less than 5% possessing at least a high school diploma.

That did not stop me from setting the sky as my limit and working hard every day to see myself attain a college degree in the USA. At a very young age I recognized the opportunities that a proper education can provide someone with commitment and grit. As a result, by 9 years old I was walking an average of four miles per trip to attend school in another district.

But my story is an outlier, as most kids in Bwoga still live in dire poverty and have never experienced the importance of education. These realities have motivated me to start thinking of ways to improve my community – academically and economically.

Thank you so much for all your help in these adverse times.
