About The Film
Premise
Short Film. Folk Horror. Manningtree, United Kingdom. 1646. Fearful preacher CALEB (50) protects his young daughters ISABEL (15) and ELYZABETH (18) at all costs from the threat of witchcraft. Upon suspecting ELYZABETH of a ghastly crime, he sends for the witch hunter. As they await his arrival at home, will CALEB realize blood is thicker than water and see reason, or will his suspicions and fears doom them forever?
The Crew
Daniel Evans (Producer)
Daniel Evans is a filmmaker based in Cardiff, UK. He specializes in Screenwriting and Producing, and his first documentary short “Piano Man” won the Hayden Voyle award. Since then, he has produced and co–written the ecological horror romance short “Bloom”, produced the award-winning dark comedy Vanishing Act” (both of which have been nominated for awards on the festival circuit) and produced the AI nightmare “Grandma Knows Best”. His first collaboration with director Peter was in producing his award-nominated short “The Opinion of Woe and the Fractured Mind Thereof” and is currently a producer on the folk horror “Bending of the Whip”.
He is Co–Director of the award-winning production company Arcadian Owls, which has produced videos for NHS, Open University, Cardiff Transformed and Vista amongst others, whilst also being the First Assistant Director for four short BBC films during the summer of 2022.
Peter Collins (Director)
Peter is a recent MA Film graduate. He has a background in Computer Graphics and experience in the industry in post-production.
He is the writer and director of the 14-part radio podcast Good Morning from Radio6, now with over 2000 listens worldwide, and with a third and final season in the works.
Part of the Young Actors Company for the past 13 years, he has acted in multiple devised and improvised pieces, including some he wrote and directed. He achieved the RADA Shakespeare Bronze, Silver with distinction, and Gold awards.
In 2022 he directed and created the CGI for the short film "The Opinion of Woe and the Fractured Mind Thereof", which has now been a part of three film festivals.
Alex David (Cinematographer)
Alex is a filmmaker and videographer based in South Wales. He has experience on both large and small-scale projects, shooting everything from short films to live event coverage; promotional videos, music videos, corporate documentaries and much more.
He’s taken all the lessons he’s learned from this experience to help him make The Bending of The Whip a beautiful yet horrific visual treat that does its wonderful script the justice it deserves.
Alongside Daniel, Alex is Co-Director of the award-winning production company Arcadian Owls; with him recently directing, shooting and co-producing a documentary highlighting the successes of the VISTA (Valley’s Innovation Showcase for Technological Advancement) project.
Joel Williams (Sound Recordist)
Joel Williams is a dedicated sound designer/recordist, committed to making any project the best it can be. He went to extreme lengths when he created a 30-minute documentary all by himself, with wondrous praise from all involved in the story.
Ever since an early age, Joel has been full of imagination, involving levitating chairs, people moving behind picture frames, and floating fish on the landing. He found that the best and most passionate use of his creative imagination was through film and storytelling, where he has developed as a writer and sound designer evidenced in his final two projects for University, Bloom and Vanishing Act. He has since worked on documentaries and has been a sound recordist on a film for the NHS.
Ben Huw Tiley (Set Designer)
Ben Huw Tiley is a student Set and Concept Designer who is currently based in Cardiff. Heavily influenced by the sci-fi and fantasy genre, in TV, Film, and Literature, Ben hopes to work on new exciting projects which push the barrier of the film medium.
He has worked behind the scenes in theatre productions and past student films. Ben has also studied Art, English Literature, and Performing Arts and has applied these skills to the short films Bloom and Vanishing Act. Now is putting his love of history to good use in the period horror The Bending of the Whip.
Jodie Agius (Set Designer)
Jodie Agius is an aspiring Set Designer and Digital Concept Artist. Inspired by animated movies ubiquitous in her childhood, Jodie went on to pursue her studies in art and design with a keen interest in architecture and filmmaking.
She is fascinated by the use of space and how it enhances and supports the storytelling experience. During her studies, she has done illustrative work for both local and foreign film companies after working on her third and most challenging student film yet, the short film Bloom, she tackled the even more challenging Vanishing Act! In 2022 she worked in the art department on Ridley Scott's film 'Napolean' in Malta.
Aaron James (Set Designer)
Aaron is a passionate TV and Film set design student based in South Wales. Being particularly influenced by period pieces and the horror genre, Aaron is keen to be a part of the industry, taking on wonderful new challenges, and experiencing the extraordinary. He is fascinated by historical architecture and the design process that goes into making both realistic and fantastical spaces for the screen.
Prior to pursuing his dream of designing and making sets, Aaron studied art and design as well as media studies, psychology, and design technology. Collectively these have helped to build up the skills he utilizes in projects today. During his studies in set design, he has had the opportunity to work on multiple small-scale student productions, allowing him to experience work behind the scenes within the art department. He is now delighted to be working on this wonderful horror-period piece.
Ariel Learner
Ariel is a recent graduate of the TV and Film Set Design course at USW. From a young age she’s loved discovering how film and television were made; combining this with her passion for hands-on creativity has led her down the path of working in art departments for exciting projects.
Ariel has loved working worked on numerous student films throughout her time at university, as it allowed her to realize that her passion is working on set. Similarly, she has worked in small crews on music videos which gave her a chance to explore other mediums. As well as this, Ariel has had work experience in the props department on productions such as the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost kingdom for Warner Bros.
Dan Cuddihy (Editor)
Dan is a recent graduate from the BA Film course at USW. Making skits and short-form content for YouTube from a young age to completing a 3-year film degree, Dan has spent a lot of time staring at timelines.
Whether it’s comedy, drama, or horror, he thrives on watching stories come together in the edit and loves nothing more than seeing the finished timeline at the end. While mostly focusing on short films as of late, he has worked in several other mediums such as; music videos, promotional videos, educational video essays, and even a cooking show on YouTube!
He is looking forward to starting a MA degree in Video Editing in September of 2022, but that won’t stop him from trying to edit anything he can get his hands on. Dan is eager to sink his teeth into this project and see what he can bring to the team.
Samuel GR Morgan (Composer)
Samuel is a composer, songwriter, and producer from Ireland and based in London who has collaborated with the Arcadian Owls team for projects such as Bloom, Vanishing Act, Missing, and now Bending Of The Whip.
As a multi-instrumentalist, he takes a hands-on approach to every stage of musical creation, combining ever-growing confidence in studio engineering with an innate sense of curiosity for music in all of its forms. He's as interested in composing and arranging for a concert orchestra as he is messing around with modular synthesizers to create new unique sounds.
Most importantly he likes to write in the third person to make himself sound more impressive than he actually is.
