The Big Mountain Cleanup

Join the Big Mountain Cleanup - Committing to restore, respect and protect our sacred mountain environments.

K2 and Everest are majestic – but their environment and communities are under threat. The time to act is now. A climber can generate 18 pounds of waste while there – this includes abandoned tents, oxygen cannisters, food and water containers, left over equipment and of course, human waste. Waste products have a big impact on the mountains and the people who call them home– pollutants are being washed into rivers by rainfall and snowmelt, contaminating water supplies for local populations and posing serious health risks from disease.

In addition to this, the safety for everyone on the mountain must be ensured, to put a stop to the needless fatalities that are occurring due to climbers accidentally clipping onto old, rotten and forgotten lines.

Nimsdai Purja MBE and the Nimsdai team made history this winter by being the first to summit K2 in winter. Nimsdai also famously summited all 14 ‘death zone’ peaks over 8,000m in just over six months – breaking the previous World Record that stood at just shy of eight years. He is launching The Big Mountain Cleanup with the mission to build a programme providing full time, seasonal cleanup teams for the mountains that need it most. This will be paired with regional recycling initiatives. The team are starting during the K2 Summer season this year, and they need your help!

Please donate today and help the mountains and their communities. #TheBigMountainCleanUp

The Nimsdai team believe we all have to do our part to step up and make a change. They have a zero-tolerance approach to waste on their Elite Expeditions and make sure they bring back everything they take up. Following ‘clean as you go’ and ‘leave no trace’ policies, they insist that all climbers and guides comply with the environmental rules, regulations and guidelines.

Nimsdai said: “We must act as the voice, carers and keepers of these sacred places for all future generations to enjoy and thrive within.”

The mission of The Big Mountain Cleanup is to build an on-going programme providing full time, seasonal clean up teams for the mountains that need it most. This will be paired with regional recycling initiatives. Starting this K2 Summer season, the team will follow this with Everest in 2022, Manaslu in 2023 and Ama Dablam in 2024. For the K2 clean, Nimsdai will be supporting Sajid Sadpara in his clean up. His father Ali Sadpara, tragically died while climbing K2 earlier this year.
