Mission Statement
Black Chef Movement’s mission is to fuel the fight against injustice in our communities through the preparation and distribution of healthy, nutrient-rich meals to the people on the frontlines of the movement. Black Chef Movement has gained local and national attention from multiple media outlets, including Buzzfeed, ABC Radio, Life & Thyme, and more.
UPDATE!
Thanks to you, we were able to hit our initial fundraising goal of $15,000! Your generosity has allowed us to purchase food, refreshments, obtain a storage space, pay for transportation, and provide stipends to Black chefs volunteering their services.
We want to reach even higher - we upped our goal so we can establish a permanent Black Chef Movement space! We are asking for a starting donation of $100,000.00. Your donations will go towards the total cost of getting a small to medium scale community space up and running. The average cost to run a food pantry in the United States runs between $100,000.00 and $200,000.00. At this time, a donation of $100,000.00 will assist us with the following:
Key money (otherwise known as a down payment), on a storefront: $15,000.00 - $20,000.00
Monthly Rent: $3,300.00
Supplies/food collection - $8,750.00
Walk-in refrigerator - $4,000.00
2 reach-in refrigerators - $1,000 - $2,500
8 Burner Gas Stove - $4,000.00
Gas Countertop griddle - $1,500.00
Small blast Chiller - $5,000.00 - $8,000.00
Convection Oven - $7,000.00
Legal expenses - $1,550.00
Office renovation and supplies - $2,750.00
Refrigerated Van (to transport food) - $ 25,000.00
Cooking Classes Equipment and Instructor Stipend - $8,700.00 - $10,000.00
Who We Are
The Black Chef Movement is a non-profit that supports Black and brown communities through the preparation and distribution of nutrient-rich meals to the folks advocating on the front lines. We support multiple social revolutions whether it be at a protest, at the voting booth, or in the healthcare system. We provide stipends to underemployed food industry professionals and use our platform to uplift the work of Black and brown chefs.
Disturbed by civil unrest and the unjust killing of Black and brown people, our Executive Director and Chef Rasheeda McCallum used her love of food and passion for justice to create the Black Chef Movement. The movement works to create a network of Black and brown chefs together to provide healthy and nourishing meals to protesters and those on the frontlines of social justice.
Nourish The Movement
The movement for justice and liberation of Black and brown people needs to be sustained for the long haul. Black Chef Movement is doing our part to ensure that the continued struggle for justice is fueled and nourished both physically and spiritually. We do this by cooking, preparing, and distributing healthy and nutrient-rich meals for folks on the frontlines of the revolution. Our team is made up of committed chefs and volunteers who wanted to give back and provide meals to the people organizing and bringing power and life to the fight for justice.
In just a short amount of time, BCM has grown to include nearly 150 volunteers and has fed more than 5,000 protesters and families across New York City.
