On December 16th , 2016 Bob Costere had just kissed his wife, Carol good bye telling her, "I love you. See you in a bit." He left Carol with her father in preparation for family to come and celebrate Christmas for the weekend in Hemmit, California.
Bob began his journey from Hemmit to the Ontario airport where he had planned to pick up his daughter and grandson and bring them back to Hemmit for the celebration.
For reasons unknown, around 11pm that eveing, Bob slowed his vehicle, pulled to the side of Interstate 10 and parked his vehicle under and overpass in the emergency lane. Though it is still unknown whether he he had just exited his vehicle or had been returning to his driver's side door, he was suddenly struck by semi truck that had unfortunately driffeted over the fog line into the emergency lane.
The driver immediately stopped and attemped to render aid but was unable to help.
Bob's passing is a huge loss to so many people as he has affected so many thoughout his life. After a 30+ year career as a deputy with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office, one of the orginal Bomb Team members and Field Training Officer, Bob retired almost 11 years ago and found joy in driving the elderly to and from their appointments in the Domincan Hospital golf cart.
Bob was the co-founder in creating the Stars of Justice, Inc. a non-profit extension of the Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriff's Association and he was a driving force in bringing back the Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriff's Charity Rodeo, an event he had been involved with in the 1980's and early 90's.
Bob was creative and colorful but always generous, almost to a fault. His goal was to provide for every child in Santa Cruz County through food drives, flea markets, fundraisers and silly acts that would bring a smile to anyone's face.
He was a wonderful husband, a fantastic father to his children and devoted grandfather. He was a brilliant investigator and though his methods may have been a bit out of the ordinary, he was a fantistic field training officer to many new recruits of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.
Bob's passing is absolutely tragic and certainly not expected after such a long dangerous career and as such, his family is trying to determine what the financial affects will be of his passing. Because of this, my wife Marisa and I have created this account in an effort to help them maintain some stability throughout this difficult and horrific ordeal. The funds will be used to pay for legal fee's and his services as his family is stil trying to determine what, if any preparations Bob may have made for just such an event.
While several of us have been helping Bob's family these past few days, I wish to share with you all in the hopes we can all take comfort and peace in the amazing insight our youth have. My 6 year old twins told me, "Dad... please don't be so sad. Now Bob is with Randy in Heaven and they can play together." I was taken back, as my children showed me the way Bob would have wanted all of us to "CELEBRATE" such a tragic event.
On behalf of Bob's family I wish to thank you all in advance for your suppoprt, whether it be finanical, through your thoughts, in your prayers or through your "shares" on soical media. We thank you all for the love and support we know you will all provide.
