The Boling Family Medical Fund

Lisa Boling is a caring mother and devoted wife who experienced a brutal one-two health punch that will have long-term consequences. She, her husband Wes and young son Cameron need help facing a long battle that will consume time, energy and finances in the years ahead.

In February, Lisa was visiting her mother in Canada when she experienced a devastating acute leukemia diagnosis. She required immediate hospitalization in Ottawa so doctors could administer life-saving cancer care. One week into emergency chemotherapy, Lisa experienced a major complication – a catastrophic bleed in her brain. Neurosurgeons saved her life, but ICU doctors were not optimistic about her prognosis. Those same doctors call Lisa a miracle today.

After six weeks in intensive care and a month of cancer care in Canada, Lisa transferred home to Nashville for an inpatient stay and short-term rehab at Vanderbilt Medical Center, followed by two months of intensive rehabilitation at a world-renowned center in Nebraska. Her cancer is in remission, but cognitive impacts from the brain bleed are expected to be long-lasting, especially related to her short-term memory.

Now Lisa is back home in Nashville, and the family is turning their eyes toward a long recovery journey on two fronts. She is receiving seven months of infusion therapy aimed at eliminating all possibility of the cancer’s return. The family is organizing continued physical, speech and occupational therapy to aid her cognitive recovery. And Lisa requires surgery this fall to replace a portion of her skull that was removed during the emergency neurological procedure.

The road ahead will likely be costly. The family faces unexpected childcare and preschool expenses. They will likely have to pay out of pocket for a portion of her cognitive therapy and potential in-home care, since insurance benefits are limited. And since Lisa received expensive medical care in another country, it is uncertain whether insurance will provide full coverage. Finally, Lisa will be unable to work for the foreseeable future.

The family will use your donations to help cover costs of education, childcare and therapy, plus healthcare expenses insurance won’t cover. They deeply appreciate the friendship and generosity they have received from their friends and family.
