THE BOYFRIEND SWEATER - a short film

THE BOYFRIEND SWEATER is about a textile artist named Jessie who’s feeling lukewarm about Margot, the girl she’s been dating. When she learns about “the sweater hex”- the idea that if you make someone a sweater, the relationship will end before you finish it- she decides to make her a sweater instead of simply telling her how she feels.

Our film is a queer love story- not a romantic one, necessarily- but exploring the more complicated parts about relationships, like how communication issues slowly eat away at us, getting stuck in our heads, and the excuses we make so we don’t have to grow. It’s also an interesting look into the world of textile arts, showing us the complicated and delicate process of how something beautiful is made- even if not for the best reason. Knitting often isn’t taken seriously, but it’s a complex art passed down from generation to generation- and so is the lore around it. Most textile artists do not mess around when it comes to the boyfriend sweater curse.

The film is written and directed by NIKKI MEZAROS, produced by ELLA SAHLMAN and PHOEBE MANDEL, and consulted on by ELLIE O'HERN, who will be doing production design and making the sweaters for the film. Don’t worry- all precautions will be taken in preventing the curse. MIYA FOLICK will star alongside PENNY O’BRIEN and MIKE LIEBENSON, with cinematography by LIZ CHARKY and assistant directing by JOJO DIBUONO.

We’re fundraising for the last $6,500 we need for THE BOYFRIEND SWEATER to come to fruition in January. Our budget will go towards fairly compensating our crew and cast, equipment rental, production design, music licensing, and more.
