The Center Community Pottery Studio

Hello! I’m Katy Lane, a full time ceramicist and pottery teacher here in Charlotte, NC. I run a small pottery business called Katy Lane Clay and teach 8 week pottery classes to students of all levels and backgrounds. I got my degree in ceramics at UNCW & I’ve been instructing and making pottery since graduating in 2019. I have taught at local pottery studios including Carolina Clay Connection, The Little Studio, and The Village. I have had the pleasure of making pottery for local businesses including Restaurant Constance, Allegiance Coffee, Grow, Verde Tribe, Enderly Coffee, & Tab Knits.
I have been nudged by my students and local community to open my pottery studio to the public for workshops and private lessons- and I hear the call- I am taking the leap!
Teaching this sacred craft to others brings me such deep fulfillment. It is such a beautiful way to weave community, art, and mindfulness into daily living. Without an investor, a grant, or a safety net of any kind, I need help getting this thing off the ground. I make an extremely modest living out of mud, so any amount of support (even $10!) goes a long way.
The Center is the name of my community pottery studio- located in Steele Creek. It is a bare bones workshop set in a serene wooded area. I’d love to invite other potters out to grow their practice, learning new techniques and comprehensive forms on the pottery wheel through class series. Classes will be intimate and intentional, hosted by me, in the spirit of finding your center in the clay.
THE CENTER NEEDS
- 8-10 Pottery wheels ($850 each)
- Glaze ($1000 to start)
- Clay ($1000 to start)
- Tools ($500-$1000)
- Shelving ($500)
- Paint ($100)
- A New Kiln ($5000)
This fundraiser will just skim the surface of my needs- as I’d eventually love to move to a larger, more central studio space closer to the city. I have set my goal amount to $10,000 with the idea that more support will come over time in the form of students attending my classes.
I am so very grateful to all of those of you who have continued to support me along my small business journey. It has been a doozy, but a blissful one. If you’re just joining me and you’d like to know more about my offerings, let’s chat! DM me @katylaneclay on Instagram. Come make some pots!!
