The Changing Earth: Indigenous Voices From Turtle Island is an innovative work of research and reportage that will present, via powerful and intimate encounters, the perspective of Indigenous peoples of the United States and Canada on the Earth's climate and interrelated Covid-19 emergencies. The book emerges from how Indigenous peoples' experience has given them a unique understanding of civilizational devastation, one that has endowed them with knowledge and solutions that present both radical and pragmatic responses to crises beyond anything known before. There has been much important talk from NGOs and foundations about the incorporation of Traditional Ecological Knowledge into whole fields of study and understanding, and this book will address that, as well as a much larger sense of TEK than is customarily thought of. It involves knowledge gained not only from pre-contact ways of life but from the ensuing generations of adaptation to another way of seeing life and Earth. It is a knowledge of how to endure and persevere, no matter the odds. As such, it must involve a very broad range of Indigenous perspectives and practices.

This work will draw on interviews with Indigenous people from all walks of life, from people of global renown to much lesser known keepers of traditions and life ways, all sharing their knowledge and experience, their questions, their observations, and their dreams of maintaining the best relationship possible to all of life.

The book is currently being written, as both authors have committed the majority of their time and resources to complete it as rapidly as possible, given the immediacy of the need to learn everything possible in these times, and the experience of Indigenous people.

Funding will be used to pay for the creation of this book, which is currently underway.

The Changing Earth: Indigenous Voices from Turtle Island is under contract to be published by The New Press.

Watch Prayer for the Earth: An Indigenous Response to These Times, a film by Ian MacKenzie:

As the world rushes toward the brink of biospheric collapse, many people are now looking to traditional Indigenous wisdom for guidance on how to live sustainably. Yet Stan Rushworth, a professor of Native American Studies and an elder of Cherokee descent, believes a different kind of wisdom is revealed once there’s a willingness to face the truth about genocide and loss of right relationship to the rest of life.
