The Community Cats of Kings' Cove

Hi Everyone,

I am organizing this fundraiser to help raise awareness and relief for a community issue in the King’s Cove Subdivision in Fruitland Park, Florida. Although this fundraiser is specifically for this area, many neighborhoods across the nation are experiencing similar problems with the growing homeless cat/kitten population, rapidly becoming a quality of life issue for these animals. Overpopulation occurs because cats are abandoned when their owners relocate or do not spay or neuter their pets. This could be happening for financial reasons or lack of awareness regarding local low-cost sterilization programs. Free-roaming felines are legal in Florida and animal control does not impound stray or feral cats unless they are injured or unhealthy. Please keep in mind that many of these cats lived in homes at some point in their lives. Some are very sweet and friendly, while others are scared and have little to no human contact. All of them have experienced hunger and even starvation, depending on the circumstance.

Many neighbors have become involved by feeding and even rescuing these homeless cats and kittens throughout the years. However, as more and more cats have reproduced, they have struggled to keep up with the need and lack of resources. Compounding the problem, the population tends to be more transient in some neighborhood areas.

I am reaching out now for three reasons:
  • Neighbors such as myself are looking for a longer-term solution to improve the quality of life for stray, abandoned and feral cats by using the Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return programs.
  • Right now, people are fostering cats and kittens in the hopes of helping them find forever homes.
  • Community cats and unadoptable kittens rely on their trusted caregivers for food. Some of these empathetic and loving caregivers are experiencing financial hardship and struggle to afford food and even the cost to spay or neuter their personal pets.
Over the next month, several community cat givers seek to trap, neuter, vaccinate and return between 20-30 cats (we estimate there are many more). Also, efforts to gather and foster potentially adoptable cats and kittens will transpire. At this time, our local animal shelter representatives believe cats and age-appropriate kittens will be adopted between 2-48 hours from arrival. Finally, we are entering kitten season. There are already several pregnant cats roaming through the neighborhood. Unless helped, they will most likely give birth under sheds and empty structures in the area.

Your contribution will make a difference to improve the quality of life for a living creature, help support community cat caregivers, and help control and reduce the cat population.
