UPDATE:
We have received word that Joshua has received an official diagnosis of Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). At this time, Sara and Nathan will be exploring the option of a bone marrow transplant for Joshua, in the hopes that this will slow or halt disease progression. He will likely require intense physical therapies and medication indefinitely.
From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank all of you who have donated or shared this link, we know that economic times are tough and we are so appreciative for even the smallest help provided. Nathan, Sara and their entire family are beyond grateful for the outpouring of prayers, love and support you have shown.
There are no words to describe how heartbroken we are to share some news from our brother Nathan and sister Sara's family in South Carolina. After experiencing two Grand Mal seizures and spending the last week in the hospital undergoing innumerable tests, their sweet twelve-year old son, Joshua, has been diagnosed with a Leukodystrophy, a very rare progressive genetic disease that causes degeneration of the white matter in the brain, often causing loss of neurological function. While the exact type of Leukodystrophy is still to be determined following even more testing, there is no known cure for these dystrophies.
The focus moving forward will be to seek treatment through clinical trials with one of the few leading specialists in this field, at the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, with the hopes of significantly slowing the disease progression. This will be so hard on all members of their family, as they will travel at least 10 hours from home as often as needed for doctors visits and treatments. The expected financial impact of this devastating diagnosis - from medical bills to travel expenses to the potential need for home care - is nothing short of overwhelming for Nathan and Sara.
For those of you who do not know, Nathan and Sara lost their two-year old son, Jonathan, following a brief illness in 2017. For them and their 6 amazing children, Joshua's diagnosis is especially painful having already suffered such a terrible loss. The challenges they will be facing in the coming months and years are ones most of us could never imagine, and we are hoping that we can lift them up with prayers and lighten their inevitable financial burden.
If you are able, please consider helping Nathan and Sara's family so they can place their focus on supporting, healing, and advocating for Joshua our funny, sweet, kind, and caring son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend- full of love and life! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
