Deputy Kangas Assistance Fund

Deputy Tom Kangas is a 29 year veteran of the Oakland County Sheriffs Office.  Tom has been a K9 Handler since 2006 and is currently assigned to the Arson Unit with his K9 as an Investigator. On February 16th, 2018 Deputy Kangas was investigating a fire scene in Oakland County when he suffered a catastrophic injury to his right (gun hand).  Tom was severely injured when an excavator grapple bucket closed on his hand.  As a result of this trauma, Tom suffered the loss of  his right trigger finger, his middle finger was severely crushed and he has extensive tissue and nerve damage throughout the hand. Since the injury, Tom has undergone two lengthy surgeries and has a long road of recovery ahead.  He will also need to be retrained to shoot left handed. Tom and his wife Rebecca have 11 beautiful children, 5 of which are afflicted with Chiari Malformation which is a rare brain disorder and Hydrocephalus that require multiple surgeries every year.     Tom has been blessed with a work assignment that enables him to work the overtime necessary to meet these difficult medical challenges and provide for his family.  However, since the injury Tom has been placed on Workers Compensation and only receiving 80% of his base pay without that overtime.  We are reaching out to our law enforcement family, friends and anyone who would like to help the Kangas family through this difficult time.  Our goal is to support the family financially so that Tom's focus can be on his recovery and rehabilitation.  Most of all we ask for your earnest prayers.
