The Downs Family recover from this nightmare

Hi, my name is Johanna Downs. I am a wife to my amazing husband Matthew and a mom to two beautiful girls. A month ago I had gone out to celebrate our friend that had unexpectedly passed away and the night turned into a nightmare. I was assaulted leaving an establishment downtown. I was found unconscious in a puddle of blood and I remember coming to, hearing a girl yell “someone help her!” I was put on an ambulance and all I kept saying was “call my husband, he is in Iraq.” They did. Matthew is a GySgt with MARSOC and was on his 8th deployment when this occurred. I went to the trauma center and suffered a TBI and a broken nose and my husband was with me through it all via phone. While at the hospital, we called someone that I considered a long time friend to come and sit with me and he told my husband he would care for me over night since I needed to be released to someone’s care. Never did I think this person would then sexually assault me while I was passed out. For one month I have suffered headaches, tinnitus, and flashbacks. But I have been progressing with a lot of rest, prayers and support from friends and my husband was flown home a day after thanks to his command and his reputation and commitment to his work. Him and I have such a strong love and a strong family that we knew we could get through this. We are the Downs.. we are fighters and never give up. We have to show our girls to always keep going! Being the athlete I am and the workhorse I love to be I continued with interviews and each day I tried to be a little more active despite being extremely frustrated at times. I have missed my two first triathlons of the season but I will get there! We are asking for help due to us having had to retain an attorney to pursue legal actions for two cases. Thankfully we went to trial to seek a protective order on that individual and it was award to us. The road head is long but that is a win. Unfortunately, I was between companies when this occurred and I had already tapped into our savings for normal expenses and now to retain the attorney. We cannot use base legal as this was an event that occurred with a veteran outside of base. We have seeked all possible resources and have come to the point of starting this Gofundme. I start my new role on May 22 and we will be back on our way financially by June. We would let ask for help if we didn’t feel we needed it as we are both extremely hard working and proud of what we have built. We didn’t expect any of this though, so here we are.
