Not even 30 minutes into the New Year, my best friend's apartment caught on fire and her whole life went up in flames within minutes. Thankfully, she and her family got out safely with the clothes on their backs, but their home and the majority of their things are damaged beyond repair. Due to the extent of the damage, their home will remain unliveable for well over a year and they will not be receiving their security deposit or last month's rent until all the insurance arrangements for the building are completed - a process which could take months. In the meantime, the family has been struggling to find temporary accommodations and begin rebuilding their lives from the ashes.
