The Electrics Web Series (Episodes 2 & 3)

Donation protected
A romantic comedy web series about love, dating, friendships, and the Black experience in Austin, Texas

THE STORY

"The Electrics" follows Lucky, a young, impulsive Black woman looking for love in a predominantly White city.

Her world is turned upside down when she’s electrocuted by lightning and gains a new gift: the ability to read minds. Only, she discovers, it’s only other Black people’s thoughts she can hear.

The story is a spotlight on dating today and how challenging and hilarious of a process it can sometimes be. It's a look at what it means to mature through your twenties and find out who you really are. The story also uses a supernatural ability to explain something seemingly unexplainable: the deep, almost telepathic connection had among people of color in America.

THE VISION BEHIND THE SHOW

Austin: it's known as the blue dot in a red state. Texas is traditionally a conservative place, but Austin stands as its own "weird," little city, leaning liberal and "more chill" than most surrounding counties.

While the city is lauded as one of the greatest places to live, it lacks in several areas, most notably in its diversity.

If you look at Austin from the eyes of the Black community, it's a place full of opportunity, beautiful landscapes, and thrilling events. But it's also rampant with microaggressions, gentrification, faux liberalism, and sprinkles of racism that many choose to deny or overlook.

And as a Black person, with the population being only 8 percent in Austin, it can be difficult finding people that relate to your experience. But for all those reasons, Austin made for an incredibly unique place to tell this story.

Imagine trying to navigate all that comes with being Black in America, and still look for love, juggle friendships and family, grow your career, and everything else that comes with adulthood. That's the meat of the series.

SHOWCASING BLACK AND BROWN TALENT

Representation and community support have been an essential part of the vision for this production.

The series features an all-Black leading cast and 80 percent Black and Brown crew. The music for the pilot was produced, written, and performed by Black music artists at a Black-owned studio. The pilot also contracted with various Austin Black and Brown caterers, venues, and businesses.

HOW MUCH TO GIVE?

From $5 all the way to $5,000, anything you give goes a long way. We appreciate all your contributions. Every dime helps support creatives of color.

Vannessa Winston
Make-Up Department Head

Semoya Moore
Hair Department Head

Born and raised in Austin, Tx. I am the 3rd child of six children, with a mindset of the oldest. After graduating high school, I attended Houston-Tillotson University and achieved my bachelors degree in Business Management. Why Business Management? Since I was a child, not only was I determined, but it was instilled in me to pursue a profession as a cosmetologist. I come from a long line of hair beauticians that specialize in cosmetology. I started off wielding a curling iron, growing into cosmetics, and eventually advanced to forming my own wigs for creative hairstyles. Now, currently furthering my experience and expertise in the field, I am doing so, and well, by operating my own beauty and health business from both my home and beauty shop located in Round Rock, Tx. I am wanting to build enough clientele and business to where I can form my own employment to young, aspiring, and talented hair beauticians like myself. I am more than thrilled to be a part of this amazing production that gives me the opportunity to critique my form and style of beauty as well as participate with individuals as the same motivation and energy as me.
