The Family Care Fund for Marilieser and Genesis

Marilieser Gil-Blanco (23) and Genesis Chacon (22) are parents to a 4-year-old and a brand new one-month-old baby girl. What should be a joyous time in their lives with a new baby has unfortunately been full of physical, mental, and financial challenges. After making the dangerous and physically demanding trip from South America through the Darien Gap, into and out of the countries of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, they arrived in Mexico only to have Marilieser collapse with sudden loss of feeling in his legs. Inflammation had spread to his spine that had rendered him paralyzed from the chest down. This condition is known as tranverse myelitis.

Once discharged from the hospital in Mexico, the young family made the perilous crossing over the Rio Grande into Texas, having to carry Marilieser on a blow-up mattress to get him across. He was injured on the barbed wire Texas border patrols have mounted along the river bank, and his feet were badly cut. Through all of this, Genesis carried their baby in her belly and her daughter on her back.

They ended up in Chicago, sleeping outside of a police station in a tent, while Genesis got closer to her due date and Marilieser's condition only worsened. They were able to be transferred to the Inn of Chicago, but Marilieser was unable to move much since Genesis could not lift him in her highly pregnant state, so his infections got worse and he was hospitalized again.

Neither Genesis nor Marilieser could work in their conditions, but luckily they were able to meet volunteers (R and S) who helped with their birth plan and with navigating the medical system. They welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world via emergency C-Section on January 10th (pictured), but right after the birth Marilieser had to be hospitalized again to have his infections and bed sores treated. Genesis was also recovering post-partum and needed help taking care of their 4-year-old.

Their cousin finally arrived to Chicago, and they were able to get an apartment through Catholic Charities and ASERAP. Unfortunately the apartment is not wheelchair accessible, and the utilities were not turned on until one month (out of the three months of rental assistance) had already passed. Marilieser has lost too much weight during his time in the shelter due to not being able to eat much, and we need to ensure that they have enough food for all of them as well.

Volunteers S and R have been helping this family from their own pockets, and the Faith Community Initiative has been able to connect them with case management, legal help, looking for accessible housing, and more. However, our collective funds are not enough to give them the support they truly need.

We are asking for your help to provide this young family with what they will need for sustainable survival. Out of three adults, only one is currently able to work. As such, they need help with baseline things like rent support (in an accessible apartment) and living expenses. Beyond that, though, Marilieser needs to be able to access the care he deserves for his condition. He still has a chance to walk again (since his spine was not severed), but he needs intensive rehabilitation. His wife and cousin cannot give him the level of medical care he needs to ensure his catheter and bed sores do not get re-infected, so he also needs some at-home nursing care. The hospital has not provided wound dressings or the other supplies he needs, either, so the funds will also be used to make sure he has the supplies needed to keep him in good health.

Please consider giving what you can so we can help this beautiful young family access what they need. No one should have to go hungry or lose housing due to circumstances beyond their control.

Lo que debería ser un momento alegre con su nuevo bebé, desafortunadamente ha sido lleno de desafíos físicos, mentales y financieros. Después de hacer el viaje peligroso y físicamente exigente desde América del Sur a través de la selva Darién, a través de los países de Costa Rica, Nicaragua y Guatemala, llegaron a México donde Marilieser derrumbó porque perdió la sensibilidad en sus piernas. Inflamación se había extendido a su columna vertebral y lo había dejado paralizado del pecho hacia abajo. Esta condición se llama mielitis transversa.

Una vez que dieron de alta del hospital en México, la familia hizo el cruce peligroso sobre el río grande hacia Texas, durante que tuvieron que llevar a Marilieser en un colchón inflable sobre el agua. Como no pudo caminar, cuando se llegaron al alambre que la policía migratorio de Texas han montado a lo largo de la orilla del río, sus pies fueron cortados gravemente. A través de todo esto, Génesis llevó a su bebé en su vientre y a su hija en su espalda, sin saber que iban hacer.

Terminaron en Chicago, durmiendo afuera de una estación de policía en una carpa, mientras que Genesis se acercaba a su fecha de parto y la condición de Mariliser continuó empeorando. Pudieron llegar a un refugio por fin (Inn of Chicago), pero Marilieser no pudo moverse mucho ya que Génesis no pudo levantarlo en su estado embarazada, y sus infecciones empeoraron y tuvo que ser hospitalizado de nuevo.

Ni Génesis ni Marilieser pudieron trabajar en sus condiciones, pero afortunadamente pudieron conocer dos voluntarios (R y S) que ayudaron con su plan de parto y a navegar la sistema médico. Dieron la bienvenida a una hermosa niña que llegó al mundo a través de una operación de emergencia cesárea el 10 de enero (en la foto arriba), pero justo después del nacimiento Marilieser tuvo que ser hospitalizado de nuevo para el tratamiento de sus infecciones y úlceras de presión. Génesis también se estaba recuperando después del parto y necesitaba ayuda para cuidar a su hija de 4 años.

El primo de Marilieser finalmente llegó a Chicago, y pudieron conseguir un apartamento a través de la Caridad Católica y el ASERAP. Desafortunadamente, el apartamento no es accesible para sillas de ruedas, y los luces no se prendieron hasta que un mes (de los tres meses de asistencia de alquiler) ya había pasado. Marilieser perdió demasiado peso durante su tiempo en el refugio debido a que no pudo comer mucho, entonces tenemos que asegurarnos de que toda la familia tienen suficiente comida para todos.

Las voluntarias S y R han estado ayudando a esta familia de sus propios bolsillos, y la Iniciativa Comunitaria de Fe ha podido conectarse con ellos para ofrecer una trabajadora social, ayuda legal, la búsqueda de apartamentos accesibles y más. Sin embargo, nuestros fondos colectivos no son suficientes para darles el apoyo que realmente necesitarán.

Estamos pidiendo su ayuda para proporcionar a esta familia joven lo que necesitarán para la sobrevivencia sostenible. De los tres adultos, solo uno puede trabajar en este momento. Como tal, necesitan ayuda con las cosas básicos como el apoyo de alquiler (en un apartamento accesible) y los gastos de vida. Sin embargo, Marilieser también todavía necesita acceder a la atención medica que él merece. Todavía tiene la oportunidad de caminar de nuevo (ya que su columna no fue cortada), pero necesita rehabilitación intensiva. Su esposa y su primo no pueden darle el nivel de atención médica que necesitará para asegurarse de que su catéter y úlceras de presión no se vuelvan a infectar. Por eso también necesita una enfermera que puede venir a cuidarlo en el hogar. El hospital tampoco le ha proporcionado apósitos para sus heridas ni los otros suministros que necesita, entonces esta recaudación de fondos también se sirviera para asegurarnos de que tenga los suministros necesarios para mantenerlo en buen estado de salud.

Por favor, les suplico que consideran dar lo que puedan para que podamos ayudar a esta hermosa familia a acceder a lo que necesitan. Nadie debe tener que pasar hambre o perder su vivienda debido a circunstancias fuera de su control.
