The Family of Daryll Straughter

On April 15, 2023, Daryll Straughter senselessly lost his life in the Greektown District of Downtown Detroit when someone shot him in the chest at a local store because of a dispute over standing in line. Daryll was just starting his security shift and was not involved in the dispute.

This senseless act took away a husband from a wife he loved dearly and took away a father from his children and a grandfather from his grandchildren. His family is grieving the loss of a loved protector and provider. Not only was Daryll a protector of his family, but he was also a protector of his friends and his community. He was well-known in the Greektown District for 20+ years and was known for his willingness to watch out for others. In 2011, when a Detroit Police Officer was struck and killed by a vehicle, Daryll single-handedly detained the person responsible until police arrived. If someone needed help, he would be there without question.

Nothing can bring him back to his family and friends that love him, nor can anything take away the pain and void that his death caused. But we can do what we can to ease the financial burden his death has on his family, allowing them to grieve and process his tragic death, while celebrating his life.

He was a gentle giant with a heart of gold. As someone posted on social media, the murder of Daryll Straughter took not only Daryll's life but a part of Detroit's soul and there is no doubt Daryll is doing exactly what he did in Greektown, backing up Saint Peter at The Gates of Heaven...with a second set of keys.
