Hello!
My name is Carol and I am raising funds to help my brother, Mark, pay for extensive medical bills.
Mark was admitted to Olathe Medical Center during the third week of November with severe back pain and loss of feeling/function in his feet and legs. He was diagnosed with an advanced staph infection that had invaded his thoracic spine and destroyed three thoracic vertebrae, allowing his cervical spine to slide down into the "empty" space, causing the loss of feeling in his legs and incredible pain in his back. The doctors told us to say our goodbyes since he was so compromised and gave Mark 70% percent chance of surviving surgery. The odds of paralysis were also very high, given he survived the surgery.
My brother is a fighter! He told the docs to do their jobs and he would do his! He has survived the surgery, though incredible pain and the loss of most function in his legs have made life more than challenging. I am happy to report that he worked through the rehab facility and continues to do rehab at home. His employer has been awesome to hold his job but on a non-paid status.
As of January 1, 2023, Mark is now able to slowly move through his house, first using a walker and now a cane. The docs are amazed at how well he is doing. The IV antibiotics were discontinued last week, as were all the uncomfortable tubes, etc. He continues on oral meds and will for a very long time. His goal is to be able to walk unaided, drive, and stand for extended periods. Staph is a monster!
He hopes to resume working asap, as he works remotely - what a blessing! His outlook is so positive, but I know he is very worried about expenses. This will be financially devasting, even with health insurance coverage. As a former Firefighter/Paramedic, Mark has faced so much, but this may top the list. I humbly ask for help for my brother. All funds will go toward paying Mark's medical expenses.
Please accept my thanks, and you will be kept in prayer.
