The final step: becoming a doctor!

Spende geschützt
On July 31, 2017 I hope to be sitting in my first class at medical school at the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at UCLA, but in order to do that I really need your help to get me to my goal of $68,000 so that I can fund my first year of medical school. With only 2 months to go this is my only avenue, and only opportunity to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a physician. But before you donate, I would like you to take the time to listen to my story and how I got to this point.

My story begins in Rural Jamaica, Clarendon to be exact, where as the son of two spectacular parents and brother to five loving brothers, I decided to become a doctor. I had made this decision in my primary school class at the age of 11 after a class assignment which asked us to choose our career paths. At this point, my decision to become a doctor was more than just an assignment, as I felt that it was my purpose in life to walk this path, and though many things would come up to try and deter me from this path I've always stayed true to this goal.

Since making that decision, I have worked very hard in school to make sure I am able to make the best of whatever opportunity I am presented with. I was able to participate in the Academically Interested Minds (AIM) program at Kettering University, where through my hard work, I was offered a scholarship to attend school there. This was the turning point in my life and the way in which I wanted to pursue my dream. While at Kettering, I used my time to give back to the community by volunteering in the Kagle Leadership Initiatives program to help high school students prepare for college and their future successes. At this point in my life my dream evolved to a more holistic goal, which was to not only become a physician but to one day return to Jamaica and help to reform the health care system there.

Working towards this goal I tried to equip myself with the necessary tools and skills to succeed, and as a result I participated in various research projects with my professors at Kettering to help me develop as a professional and to look at issues in the world with a different lens. I was also able to develop my understanding of the world and grow as a person by my experience working as a medical scribe at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI. This opportunity allowed me to work directly with physicians who were willing to answer all my questions regarding the profession as well as give me advice on my journey. This experience prepared me to be ready to enter the world of medicine and do my best to make a difference.

During my senior year of college I began to apply to medical schools. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I was only able to apply to two medical schools, which is significantly less than the suggested amount to have a chance of getting accepted. Despite this disadvantage, I was fortunate enough to get an interview at DGSOM at UCLA where I did my utmost best to show my desire to become a physician. I believe that my research experience, experience in the medical field and volunteerism were all instrumental in me getting the opportunity to interview and it was as a result of those people around me who saw my potential and wanted to invest in me that I was able to do my best.

After my interview I waited a long time without hearing anything from DGSOM, however I never gave up hope. I was finally rewarded on May 3, 2017 when I received a call telling me that I was accepted to the David Geffen School of Medicine. This was the most surreal experience in my life and was the result of all my hard work and all the support and love I received from those around me.

However, my dream is now at a critical point, a point at which I desperately need your help. In order for me to study at DGSOM, I need to have the money to pay for at least my first year of medical school. The reason for this is that I need a student visa in order to study in the USA, and I can only get that visa if I have what is known as an I-20. In order to get my I-20 from DGSOM, I will have to show the US government that I am able to fund at least my first year of medical school. As a international student, I am not able to seek federal or institutional aid and so I am left to bear the entire cost of my education for medical school.

This is an urgent situation, and that is why I am seeking your help. Classes begin in 2 months on July 31, 2017 and I need to have all these documents done before then. I do not know what will happen in these few months, but if I am able, with your help, to secure the money needed to guarantee my first year of medical school I will be immensely grateful and indebted to you all. I am seeking this help not only for myself, but for my family, and for my country. My dream is ambitious and I strongly believe that attending DGSOM will equip me with the final set of skills I need to be able to fulfill that dream and make the difference in the world that I want to make.

If you find it in your heart to donate, please do so, also please share this with your friends and family so they can hear my story and possibly help as well. My future depends on the generosity of everyone reading this. I would like to thank you for your support again and if there is anything you need me to clarify, I am ready to answer. Please give me your support as I look forward to beginning this journey to fulfilling my dream with you all.

I will keep you updated regularly on my journey as I move towards this final phase. Thank you.

Regards,
Micheal Thomas
