Be a part of this incredible project that is contributing to carbon capture, reducing pollutants, restoring and enhancing a unique ecosystem in the UK.

Hi, I'm James

And I have always been fascinated by nature and I have been a eco volunteer and activist for many years. During lock-down, I decided it was time to really make a positive difference. One thing I have never been before is a moss farmer. Here's why that is the best thing I ever decided to do:

I finally found and bought it in 2022, this fifty-acre parcel of land in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which holds a rich history as a lead mine, Victorian council tip, and grazing land. Today, it stands as a beacon of natural recovery and biodiversity, hosting rare species. It has remnants of temperate Celtic rainforest, and most importantly, Peatland.

Our mission is to restore and enhance this unique ecosystem, serving as a model for environmental rejuvenation.

Did you know? Only 3% of the planet is Peatland, but it stores more than 30% of the Earth's soil carbon. Protecting it, and restoring damaged peatlands is the Project's core mission.

In our first year, we conducted extensive surveys to understand the current state of the land. Now we are ready for the next phase of our journey - to tackle diffuse pollution from mine spoils, and Peatland restoration.
Our Goals:
  • Sphagnum Moss Farming
  • Vegetation Restoration
  • Research and Innovation
  • Wildlife Protection
  • Historical Documentation

Our Ambitions for Firestone Bridge is to have a thriving natural habitat, promoting indigenous species while celebrating its industrial heritage. Focusing on:
  • Contamination Mitigation.
  • Ecological Recovery.
  • Sustainable Species Introduction.
  • Community Engagement.
All to be managed in a natural, sustainable manner.

Broader Benefits and Why to get Involved!
Climate action: Contributing to Carbon Capture and biodiversity, reducing pollutants across a broader area.
Public Enjoyment: Creating a space for the public to enjoy the heritage and natural environment.
Knowledge Sharing: Documenting our approach to sharing expertise.
Educational Resources: Continuing as an ongoing ecological and environmental resource.
