The Food Project - Creating Youth Jobs
West Baltimore is a community of neighborhoods plagued by high unemployment, lower rates of high school completion, high crime, and drug abuse are chronic problems that create significant barriers to its residents. The median household income in 21223 is $25,427k. The unemployment rate is 15.2% with 49.2% children living below the poverty line. 1 out of 10 of our youth are dealing with homelessness and/or parents in addiction. Many of the youth 14-21 look for ways to provide food and basic necessities for themselves. Not having safe options leads to risky behavior like selling drugs or sex for food, clothing & shelter.
The Food Project, a program of U Empower of Maryland, runs out of a shut down school in Southwest Baltimore. In addition to bringing cooking, farming, restaurant skills, sustainable food sources, mentorship to the youth in the community The Food Project works to bring job opportunities & hope to the youth of South West Baltimore. We need to create more jobs to meet the needs of a community trying to survive and to give the youth options off the streets.
Help us to create jobs for the youth in SW Baltimore:
$10/hr helps us to hire a youth for 1 hr.
$250/wk helps us to hire a youth part time
$2000/mo helps us to hire a full time person from the community.
