The Forum Collective

Tax deductible
For 2021, The Forum Collective is renewing our obligation of responsibility to our community. Toward this end, we have committed to pay all of our collaborating artists $20/hour in recognition of artistic practice as skilled labor. We also vow to continue our pay-what-you-can philosophy in order to permit access to our work regardless of economic circumstances. These commitments fulfill our responsibility as a community-focused organization that practices ethical principles.

Dedication to these principles compels us to realistically examine our producing capacity. In short, the more donations we receive, the more work we can create and the more artists we can employ.

The Forum Collective produces work exploring political moments that represent universal human experiences. While analyzing work through this lens, we create projects blending live performance, gallery curation, and journalistic reporting. The end result is a multi-layered exploration of sociopolitics.

Focused on shared governance, The Forum’s Artistic Board is composed of multidisciplinary producers and curators. Its members analyze a central piece of work in relation to a political, social, or historic trend while deciding on actions as a group. This structure allows us to:

- Redefine the definition of journalism theatre while responding directly to current social and political events.
- Detach from traditional hierarchies that have previously excluded marginalized communities.

The Forum Collective creates spaces in which artists and audiences can contextualize the issues and questions raised by the project in terms of their real-world impacts.

- Our projects are multidisciplinary and include live performance, visual & audio art, written articles, and digital data compositions. The end result relates to different types of people and learning styles while deeply exploring a central topic.
- Our projects utilize interviewing and researching the communities or topics that are central to the work. While this forces our Artistic Board to consider respectful representation, this allows us to showcase the nuances in the narratives of marginalized groups.
- Our projects focus on community outreach by including experts and advocates from relevant communities to lead or participate in panels and discussions.

This unique mix of structure and intention leads to work that speaks for, to, and with audiences.

The Forum is fiscally sponsored as part of Playground’s Innovator Incubator. The Incubator is a multi-year intensive incubation program to support theatrical innovation and the launch of new innovative theatrical production companies. This year’s Innovator Incubator companies are: Analog Theatre, The Forum Collective, Juneteenth Theatre Justice Project, Kunoichi Productions, The Moonrisers, Poltergeist Theatre Project, and Theatre Cultura. This fall three episodes of The Forum Collective’s web series ‘ether’ were presented as part of the Innovator Showcase.
