The Giving Tree: Escaping Domestic Violence

Hi my name is Lori Kinsey and I am fundraising for The Giving Tree.

For the last few years a small group of us work with the local county Sheriff's office to support families who have recently escaped domestic violence during the holiday season.

It all started when we were playing Santa, delivering gifts to families in need when we noticed some families didn't have a Christmas tree for the gifts. When we spoke to them, we discovered most of them had recently fled a domestic violence situation and had left with only the clothes they had on their backs.

I know what it's like to leave everything behind when exiting a domestic violence situation. Many times, a DV survivor starts over with nothing. Especially in a fleeing situation.

It's extremely expensive to purchase a Christmas tree, ornaments, and lights on top of everything else that has to be replaced after going through something so traumatic.

This year, my friends and I would like to ease some of the stress by gifting domestic violence survivors not only a Christmas tree but in any way they need support (gifts, clothing, beds, pay bills, etc). As a mother who has experienced what these families are going through, I know how important decorating the tree and having gifts to open on Christmas morning is to the little ones.

Domestic violence has always been an issue but since the pandemic, cases escalated to astronomical numbers. We know there are many families that have been affected.
