Help Tim Gross & his Family with Disabilities
Donation protected
What happened:
On the morning November 12th Tim Gross was getting ready for work when his heart stopped, unfortunately causing him to fall (hard enough to break the shower plumbing), sending water everywhere, and Tim to the hospital. Luckily, this woke his wife Kate, who was able to get him out of the quickly filling tub. Once he was rushed to the ER, doctors concluded that he had suffered from a cardiac syncope as they observed him once again lose consciousness at the hospital. After some tests, they determined that his heart was stopping spontaneously for up to about 20 seconds, but are not sure why it is happening. With no warning, this can cause his body to reset, sending him to the ground wherever he’s standing. Because of this, he will not be able to return to his job or do any strenuous activity for at least two months.
Who is Tim:
Tim Gross, a Pittsburgh and Brookline native, is also a passionate horror movie fanatic and critic well known in the indie horror film community. He is the creator of GrossFest, an independent horror convention, and Gross Movie Reviews, a website where he reviews and compares horror films.
Tim's Family:
Together Tim and Kate have raised two beautiful children, Sara and Timmy, who’s needs as young adults on the spectrum remain best met by living at home with their parents. Since they need 24/7 care, Kate has had the demanding task of staying home to take care of them every day, sharing the heavy lifting tasks with Tim when he’s home - making sure everyone is safely lifted out of the wheelchair, showered and put to bed, etc. With Tim unable to work, and Kate a 24/7 caretaker, this leaves them at least two months without their main income. This will be a difficult time for them, especially since Tim will not be able to help with any strenuous tasks, leaving those jobs for Kate and whoever else can help.
Why this Funding is Needed:
In addition to this unfortunate situation and not being able to provide an income for several months, amid the covid pandemic when the health of their at-risk children is vitally important, they recently discovered their roof needs repairs, and will need replaced. While they’ve saved up to get it done, they are now having to choose between making necessary repairs to the roof, or using that to get through the next few months without work – no one should have to make that decision, especially when everyones health and safety is on the line.
Can they File for Disability and Unemployment?
Tim will not get disability time off since he wasn’t hurt at work, which means he will have to burn up his remaining two weeks before going on an unpaid leave of absence for several months. Tim may be able to get a partial unemployment, but may not qualify under certain categories, and in the end it will not be enough to cover their family's special needs, in addition to the roof. My hope is that we can quickly lend a hand before this happens. Any money raised will help towards caregivers, ER, hospital, and other doctor bills, repairs to the broken plumbing, replacement of roof, food, transportation, and any other expense the Gross family will incur during this time.
Why did I Start this Fund?
I’m Nathan, Tim and Kate’s neighbor. I started this GoFundMe for them because, in addition to having wonderful kids and having the ambitious task of meeting their special needs, they are the neighbors everyone dreams about having when they move into a new community. Tim and Kate have always been there for anything I need, and even when I don’t need anything at all. They are always there providing a helping hand with a smile. Tim and Kate have never asked for help, and I know they will never ask for this, so I want to do it on their behalf.
Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Nathan Porter
