The Haggerston Needs Your Help!
Donation protected
The Haggerston is an independent and community focused pub in Dalston, Hackney. As well as a meeting point for Hackney residents it is proud to provide a platform for a range of local art and culture.
Weekends host a diverse lineup of up coming and established DJ’s, while the Sunday night jazz residency has been running for 20 years and is a local institution. We have also hosted popular poetry readings, Vogue and dance classes as well as a summer BBQ run by a Hackney based record label. The basement is home to The Lungley Gallery, a non-profit art space curated by Mark Lungley and showcases artists from the area and further afield. Our upstairs space has been used to support fundraisers for charities such as Akwaaba (a Hackney social centre for migrants) and Hackney Mind. The Haggerston is one of the last of its kind, a cornerstone of Dalston nightlife and culture.
In short it means a lot of things to a lot of people, but now that is at risk.
Despite our wide range of events The Haggerston is profitable when at capacity and running until 3am. Under current guidelines and to keep our customers and staff safe, we were operating with table service, a severely reduced capacity and unable to provide live music or loud DJ’s. After trying to open in this manner it became apparent very quickly that this is not a sustainable way for the business to run. It is not possible for us to run at a loss for even a short period of time and so unfortunately we have no choice but to close our doors again.
This is where we need your support. We did not want to start a fundraiser until it was absolutely necessary and that time is now.
Your donation will be used first and foremost for continuing overheads.
Of our £10000 target;
- £6000 will pay rent for this extended period of closure.
- £4000 would allow us to keep the entire team employed as furlough costs begin to rise.
- Further funds raised will be vital in adapting the pub to allow us to accommodate a larger amount of people in a safe but comfortable manner. This includes new tables and chairs for the upstairs room and back garden as well as protective screens.
Thank-you so much for your support and we look forward to the reopening party! To show our appreciation we have the following gifts for those who donate:
