Hello, welcome to The Heath. A short film headed by the creative mind of writer/director Oliver Plummer. The story aims to explore growing up and growing apart from your friends, through the surrealist dreamscape lens of ‘The Heath’. Tackling themes of mental health, being there for your friends, how can we connect with them and how to pull them from the edge.
Synopsis For The Film
Centreing around two close friends reminiscing on their friendship, Luke, a young man who has escaped reality, escaped his mind, to The Heath, an endless, beautiful forest he's set on spending eternity exploring. Meanwhile his best friend, Moss, is left to pick up the pieces of Luke's previous life that he has been left behind.
Visual Aesthetic
With The Heath we want to focus on the parallels of the two protagonists lives and one of our primary ways of doing that is through the visual styles we want to adopt to achieve this. With Luke and The Heath we want to use a wide, swirling lens to grasp the expansiveness of The Heath’s space and beauty to make the audience feel attracted to the dreamy landscape. We want to adopt the visual styles of Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, particularly his film Poor Things (2023), and the quirkiness and nature oriented spaces of Dave McCary’s Brigsby Bear (2017).
With Moss’ story we want to emphasize a more closed in look, with a 4:3 aspect ratio, closing in the frame of the screen and using black and white styles for an intimate feel and to grasp the seriousness of the situation that Luke seems to ignore. Reminiscent of the visual aesthetics of films like Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020).
Meet the Crew:
Director
Oliver Plummer is a third year student from Bournemouth University. His main stomping ground and area that he thrives within is script writing. As an accomplished screenwriter, he’s been one of the minds behind other Bournemouth based films like Stay a While, Hold It Together and the sole mind behind the surrealist drama Life’s a Stage. He’s also a succeeding script supervisor and script editor, who has supervised more scripts than we can count. With The Heath it will be the first time Oliver will be fronting as the director for a project with an experienced and hard working team behind him.
“Hi my name is Oliver Plummer, writer, director and actor in The Heath, my directorial debut.
From the distinct visual styles of The Heath versus The House to the uniquely quirky character designs of Luke and Moss, each member of the crew has been working tirelessly to make the world of The Heath truly unique and beautiful.
I have worked with this crew on numerous projects, and am excited to work with these wonderfully talented people once again.”
Cinematographer
Third year BU student Kryan Danielewicz is primarily a director, however he has been the visual mastermind behind countless films such as the horror crime thriller Erebus where he’s been able to cut his teeth for gorgeous imagery. With his previous directing work he’s able to have a balance of experience with the creative and technical sides of camera work, being able to find the best image for every shot.
“Hey I’m Kyran, the cinematographer for The Heath. Having worked with this team on a number of projects, it’s been a joy getting to work on Oli’s directorial debut and I’m very excited about what we’ve been cooking up. From a cinematographic stand point, Oli and I have developed a specific visual language that allows for some really fun camera work, and should hopefully create a visceral viewing experience for this deeply personal story.”
Producer
Alex Slowther is a third year BU student acting as a pillar of organization and knowledge for those who have worked with him. Being the executive producer of films like the three word trilogy, Moving On, Hold It Together and countless more, Alex has established himself as one of the most reliable producers to work with.
“Hi I’m Alex and I’m producing The Heath. I love the story and world Oli has crafted and am excited at the challenge of managing a film set on a location as unique and different as the heath will be compared to what I’ve produced before.”
