Greetings, I am Dr. Stacey Patton, an educator, journalist, author, and passionate advocate for the education of young individuals, particularly those enrolled in historically black colleges and universities.

Upon starting my journey as a journalism professor at Morgan State University back in 2016, it quickly became evident that some of my students were facing significant challenges in keeping up with their coursework. My investigation revealed that many couldn't afford the necessary textbooks, a problem exacerbated by the soaring costs of higher education. This financial burden, encompassing tuition, housing, meals, and books, is a widespread issue affecting countless students nationwide.

Numerous students rely on financial aid, grappling with issues ranging from food and housing insecurity to various other obstacles. Many are trailblazing as the first in their families to pursue higher education, without familial support. Some bravely juggle the responsibilities of parenthood and work alongside their studies, while others battle health challenges. Committed to the success of my students, I felt compelled to contribute in any way I could.

Over the past 11 semesters, with the incredible support of generous individuals across the country, we've managed to raise nearly $200,000!

Let me share how this program operates:

This semester, my goal is to raise $25,000, benefiting approximately 70 students at both Morgan State and Howard University, with funds distributed equally between the two institutions. Regardless of their major, each student completes a form and provides a list of required textbooks. On a first-come, first-served basis, they can receive a maximum of $250. This assistance extends beyond textbooks, covering course software, hotspots for students facing internet connectivity challenges in online classes, and digital equipment essential for production courses.

Sadly, the demand is immense, and I'm often forced to turn away students due to limited funds. Some students may even receive assistance to acquire laptops, digital tools for their courses, or specialized software. Therefore, the more funds we raise, the more students we can aid.

Many recipients have shared that this textbook fund has been transformative, significantly enhancing their academic performance and ability to complete their coursework. I sincerely hope you'll take a moment to contribute whatever you can, regardless of the amount. Our students deeply appreciate your kindness.

By investing in our young individuals today, we are investing in a brighter future for us all.

With much gratitude,
S Patton
